"Nigga, we gon' be alright
Nigga, we gon' be alright
We gon' be alright
Do you hear me, do you feel me? We gon' be alright
Nigga, we gon' be alright
Huh? We gon' be alright
Nigga, we gon' be alright
Do you hear me, do you feel me? We gon' be alright""I love this song!" Monique said waving her hand up and down in the air.
It was the end of March on a beautiful Sunday afternoon and me and some co-workers were at an outdoor music festival in L.A. People were fed up with some of the new executive orders that President Trump was signing into law so various musicians from different genres decided to come together to speak out against the injustices.
At the moment Kendrick Lamar was telling us that we was 'gon' be alright!' His performance was so emotional that I could see tears running down the faces of some of the people around me.
The more time I spent going out with friends the more I realized what I had missed out on while being tied to Christian all my life. I felt like I was playing catch-up now and enjoying the freedom of coming and going and doing as I pleased.
Both Christian and Odell were still persistent, even more than before actually. I didn't understand why when I was clear with both of them that I was having too much fun by myself to think about a relationship.
I didn't want either of them to wait around for me because I couldn't promise them that I would want either of them when I was ready!
I guess in a way I was also celibate because the last time I had sex was with Odell back in Miami. But I wasn't stressing over it like I thought I would be at this point.
I was waving my heads in the air enjoying the outdoor fresh air and Kendrick's straightforward lyrics that was speaking to the pain most of us felt.
"When you know, we been hurt, been down before, nigga
When my pride was low, lookin' at the world like, 'where do we go, nigga?'
And we hate Popo, wanna kill us dead in the street for sure, nigga
I'm at the preacher's door
My knees gettin' weak and my gun might blow but we gon' be alright"The five of us were chanting and rocking along with him, there was this energy in the air that made this entire massive crowd feel like one big family. It felt more like a family reunion and we were expressing our pain on one accord through our favorite artists.
Artists like Jill Scott, Erykah Badu, Maxwell, Kehlani, Solange, Janelle Monae, Jidenna, Sevyn Streeter, Alessia Cara, Luna, Maroon 5, Jhene Aiko, John Legend, Post Malone, Dave East, Chance The Rapper, J Cole, Nas, Ice Cube, Snoop Dogg, Big Sean, Lupe Fiasco, T.I., Wale, PND, The Weekend, Macklemore, Outlast, Young Jeezy, The Game and so many other special surprise artists were really bringing it.
It was an emotional concert that I wouldn't soon forget.
My phone was vibrating in my pocket and I knew it was probably Odell because he was backstage with Drake, who was one of the surprise guests. He was coming out on the stage with PND during his set. It was actually Odell who even got us tickets to this concert.
