School had just ended, so I figured that now would be a good time to ask her.

Stephanie was at her locker with another girl, Shay Xavier. She had dark blond hair and green eyes. Both of them wore cheerleading uniforms, so they were on their way to practice.

"Hey, Stephanie, Shay."

"Hi, Abidemi!" Stephanie closed her locker and they started walking away. I caught up with them. "So...something has been racking my brain--"

"OMG, check out this new bracelet my father just bought me on his business trip to Italy. She showed me her diamond tennis bracelet. Wow, that looks gorgeous. "Nice bracelet, but that isn't what I wanted to ask you."

"Okay but make it fast. We have practice in five minutes," said Shay.

"So...about two weeks ago, you told me that Victor doesn't like black girls..."

"Uh-huh. I did." We started going downstairs to the gym. "But when I talked to him at the Halloween party, he said that he didn't."

"Hm, did he?"

I walked in front of them and crossed my arms. "I know that you like him but why did you lie about something like that?"

She pursed her lips and then flipped her hair.

Then gave me a devilish grin. "Because, hon, compared to me, you're just another little black girl."

"WHAT IS THAT SUPPOSED TO MEAN?!"

They both stepped back and giggled like hyenas. "Ouch! Someone's angry! Look at me and then look at you. I have long, straight hair, my eyes are lighter than yours and not to mention my skin. I'm taller, my body is better than yours, and my lips and nose aren't as big as yours. Society already thinks that I'm better than you and so will Victor."

"Oh, you think just because you look like a Barbie doll, you're better than me? Look, menina...."

"Yeah, we don't speak burrito, okay? Goodbye," said Shay.

"It's not--it's Portuguese, you pasty devils!"

They both stopped in their tracks and turned around. "What did you call us?"

"I said, 'it's Portuguese, you pasty devils--" That's when Stephanie pushed me down the stairs. My face hit the floor and I saw blood dripping from my nose. Oh, great.

"I don't appreciate racism, sweetie," she said.

"That was racist--" Shay grabbed my arm and twisted my wrist. She didn't break it but it still hurt. A lot. I almost screamed. "OW!"

"Quiet! If I see you near Victor, it will be hell for you. You just got here but I will make sure that the rest of your days here are miserable!" She flicked my forehead with her thumb and index finger. And then she did the absolute worst.

"You f***ing n*gger!"

And I burst out in tears. I've never been called that before.
