All of us, including Lukas, sat down at the desks while Kiwi and Tausa'afia stood at the front of the room.
Tausa'afia cleared her throat and straightened her posture. "Hello and welcome to the SBHSFPOCNCAC's third meeting, also known as Stony Brook High School's Feminist, People of Color, and Non-Christians Activist Club. Everyone please welcome our new members."
Kiwi was the only one that clapped. She gave Tausa'afia a look and rolled her eyes. Then she passed out papers and pens. "Please state your name, age, grade, ethnicity, religion, interests and why you're in this group."
After a few minutes, we all wrote down what we needed. "Okay, we'll go first. My name is Tausa'afia Rina Kawai. I'm 18 years old, a senior, and I'm Hawaiian, Japanese, and Samoan. My religion is Hawaiian--I was born in Oahu--I like updating my spam feminist Instagram page, drinking coffee, reading, writing, babysitting, and after college, I plan on becoming a writer. Your turn, Kiwidinok."
"Okay, people, it's just 'Kiwi', mkay? Anyway, I'm Kiwidinok Dustu but just call me 'Kiwi'! I'm 17 years old, a senior, and I'm Chippewa or as other people know it, Ojibwe. I like playing basketball, volleyball, swimming and I want to join the WNBA. I'm in this club because I need people to stop making cracks about my height...especially short boys. They wish they were as tall as me."
Oh, she would definitely make the WNBA. They want her. They need her, she needs them. Issa win-win.
"Hm...Lukas, why don't you go first?"
He shrugged and stood up, holding his paper in his hand. There were a few scribbles on it. "Hi...my name is Lukas Sanchez. I'm 17 years old and a junior. I'm Dominican and Catholic. I like playing video games, skateboarding, dating--"
Nina snickered. "Sorry, sorry."
"Eating, sleeping, and more eating. I want to be....nah, it's stupid."
"What?" Tausa'afia asked him. "We're all very interested. Right, everyone?"
Crickets...
"Okay, fine," he said. "I want a be...a chefnqfj."
"A what?" Victor asked.
"A chef, okay?!" He slouched in his seat and laid his head down on the desk. "What? So what if I make plantanos when I'm home alone?"
"No, that's a remarkable career option. Maybe you could bring some samples of your cooking," said Kawai.
"Psst," I went at Lukas. "Send some my way, my guy."
"Me too," went Victor. He gave us a thumbs up.
"You forgot to tell us why you're in this club." Kiwi asked. "Oh, my bad. Um...I'm in this club because men should be chefs if they want to be. I'm done."
"I'll go next. My name is Nina Concepción. I'm 17 years old and a junior, too. I'm Filipina and...well, I'm raised Catholic but I'm actually atheist. I like yoga. I'm in this club because..." she took a deep breath. "The more the merrier, am I right? I want to become a psychiatrist." She sat back down.
Fatima stood up and read from her paper. "My name is Fatima Khisri. I'm a 16-year-old junior and I'm half Lebanese, half-Moroccan. I'm a proud Muslimah. I like exercising, playing board games, reading--haven't had much dating--anyway, I want to become a fitness instructor. I'm in this club because I'm anti-bullying and pro-being healthy, mentally as well as physically. Everybody should know that people can be plus-size and fit, too."
"Sign Victor up for your classes. He needs some serious leg work," said Lukas, while pointing at Vic's calves. Okay...yes, he's my boyfriend...but he does have some skinny legs. "So, are we just gonna ignore that hairline, bro?" he clapped back. He passed Lukas a Sharpie. "Better get to filling. If that hairline is barking, you better get to marking." We all stifled a laugh while he put on his hood while groaning. Lessoned learned: don't roast if you're not safe.
"Whose next? How about Victor?" said Tausa'afia. Bae stood up and cleared his throat.
"Heyyy. The name's Victor Evans and I'm 17 years old. We're all juniors, aren't we?"
"Seniors, remember?" asked Kiwi and Tausa'afia.
"Oh...the more you know. Anyway, I'm half-Irish, half-Bahamian. I like rollerblading, taking pictures, putting them waves in my hair..." I rolled my eyes. Funny guy. "I'm in this club because everybody deserves equal opportunities. Also, I want to become an entrepreneur, so I'll major in business at Stony Brook University, then go to Harvard Business School." He sat down and everybody looked at me. Guess I was next.
