He phoned the local police. His call went through to a central unit, the local branch being closed after six o'clock. 'I want to report a possible kidnapping at Wittering.' He gave his own name, Corinne's name and address.

The operator asked, 'Where is the kidnap taking place?'

'In her home. At Wittering.'

'This may not be a kidnap ... it could be a domestic.'

'She's being held against her will ... as a prisoner.'

'Why do you think Miss Roussel is being held against her will?' asked the operator.

'Because her phone is cut off and she's not meant to be down here. Her plan was to go to London.'

'Have you knocked on her door?'

'No. But I strongly believe she is at risk.'

The operator was taking some notes. 'She's being restrained ... against her will ... and for how long ... ?'

'For the past hour.'

'Can I suggest, sir, that you knock on her door and ask to see Miss Roussel.'

He agreed and disconnected the call. A feeling of foolishness crept over him. Maybe it was just a matter of Corinne's mobile having a dead battery, and perhaps she had tried to message him. As he stood looking out to sea a certainty crept over him that he wasn't wrong.
