"Maki! Good luck!"
I find myself sighing. That idiot knows this is just practice, right? Going to school was never something I cared about but it made Aki happy so I put up with it. This year, for my third and final year, he wanted me to join the baseball team with him. After first, I thought it was a joke until I actually made the team. Now, I'm the best hitter they have while Aki is the best pitcher. Now, it's where we spend our time after school until six. We've only just arrived and I'm usually up against the batting machine first. Aki sits in the bleachers and always cheers me on like this is an actual game.
I have a balanced stance with the weight on the balls of my feet. My weight is shifted slightly to have more on my back leg than my front. The width of my stance is slightly wider than shoulder width apart and I have some flex in my knees. I bring the bat over my shoulder and nod at my coach. He presses the button and the first comes out and it's an immediate curveball. I go under and swing it out the park.
I hit every single ball that comes to me, even as they pop out faster. The entire time, Aki is shouting encouragement. The coach gives me a five-minute break while the other batters can come in for their round of practice with the machine. I go to the locker room to grab my bottle of water. Aki comes after me, pouncing on my back. "Maki! You were great, as always! If we keep improving like this, we'll definitely make it to the championships! Don't you think so?"
I pat his arm and nod. "Of course, Aki." His scent when he talks about what he's passionate about leaks and surrounds me. It's nothing like I've smelled on anyone, especially other werecats. It's very sweet and enticing. It could bring me to my knees if I allowed it to overcome me. It would be dangerous for me to smell it while I was in heat. "Shouldn't you be out there with the others?"
"The coach is doing pitchers with the batters now. I don't want anyone but you to hit my pitches, Maki."
Man, this idiot. I gulp down some water and pry him from around me. It's becoming harder and harder to be close to Aki in my human form. It seems my senses are a bit more sensitive when I'm around him. It is as if my heat is every day now. His light eyes and his eccentric behavior seem to attract me. It could be my heat talking or maybe I have deeper feelings for Aki than I once thought.

"I'm sorry for your loss."
The look on the wife's face is nothing new to me. Every day I work to save lives but there is always those select few that can no longer be saved and becomes beyond my capabilities. I take responsibility as a doctor and approach the families myself. I've been pushed, screamed at and blamed for the person's death. The best I can do is report the death and walk away with my hand's clenched into a fist in my lab coat pockets, trying so hard not to cry.
This time, it was a middle-aged man who was in a terrible car accident while on his way home from work. He was impaled by a huge piece of his front windshield upon impact. He had internal bleeding along with many broken bones. They brought him here to Sacred Heart in hopes to save his life. In the waiting room was his mother, his wife, sisters, and brothers.
I was on my way out when I was called to the ICU for an emergency operation. The man fought for his life and I met him halfway. Sadly, he had destroyed many vital organs and, once the glass was removed, he died from major blood loss. Due to his rare blood type, I knew I couldn't get a blood transfusion in time to save him.
As a doctor, we carry the burdens that no other being would understand. We work to make those that are sick better and we also support the families as best we can. When we lose someone, it almost feels like the person was someone we were related to as well. We can feel the pain the families feel once the bad news is delivered. But we continue on. We hope for that one day that we will never have to tell someone their relative is incurable or beyond saving again.
