A MEETING WITH MILLICENT

For the first time since discovering the room behind Gregory the Smarmy, there was a new dot on the Marauder's Map. It was labeled 'Millicent Bagnold'. Having a father in the Ministry, the boys knew that name rather well. What they didn't know was why the Minister of Magic would be visiting Hogwarts by herself on a Friday morning. Once word of her arrival got around during breakfast, the generally accepted theory terrified them.

The Weasley twins had hoped to return to the common room unseen after the plumbing passage debacle the day prior, but their inattention had led them directly into a crowd of Quidditch players returning from tryouts. The only excuse they could give Charlie for being soaked to the bone was that they had swapped Quidditch for a swim in the lake. Apparently, they would have fared better with the truth, because their lie had unknowingly broken one of last year's Educational Decrees and sent the Head Boy and Girl directly to Professor Dumbledore. Percy couldn't wait to drag his brothers to the notice board in the common room to show them where the nineteen Ministry-Sanctioned Educational Decrees had been posted. After the Dungbombs and the disappearance of Benjamin Nettles, this recent act was enough proof for the students to conclude that Ministry intervention was certain. They were going to separate the Weasley twins.

As Fred and George left the Great Hall that morning, they were bombarded with whispers and sideways glances — many coming from fellow Gryffindors.

"Sorting Hat got it wrong, mate. It happens."

"I told you! There's never been a set of twins in the same house. It's right there, in Hogwarts, A History."

"Pure-blood twins...what a joke! They can deceive some people, but not me."

"Dumbledore will have none of this."

"I hope whichever one they transfer doesn't land himself into our house. Ravenclaw doesn't want either of them."

"Wait and see. They'll be parted by the afternoon."

It was painful to hear the condemnation of the older students, but nothing was more defeating for the boys than watching Cedric Diggory being led away by one of the Hufflepuff prefects.

"They're not your mates anymore," the boy said harshly. "You want to succeed in life, Cedric. No one from the Weasley family will help you, I promise."

Masking their grief, the twins took a sharp turn toward the Entrance Hall and slid into a cleverly hidden passageway behind a bookcase.

"They can't separate us, Fred. I don't want to learn magic without you!"

"Calm yourself, George. There's a way out of this," Fred urged in a tone that suggested he had a plan, his eyes on the crowded hallway. "We've got Friday mornings off. The Minister has been with Dumbledore since breakfast — in his office — at his desk. We need to get up there and see what they've been doing."
