THE SHRIEKING SHACK
Fred and George returned from breakfast the following day to find Lee waiting in the common room, flapping the morning edition of the newspaper in their faces.
"You've made the Daily Prophet again! Unbelievable. My mates are famous." He followed them to the couch, his cheeks tinging pink. "They said you're the first ones ever to be called up without a tryout."
"So you're not mad, then?" asked George tentatively. They had been avoiding Lee since their meeting with Professor McGonagall.
"Why would I be mad?"
"Because we made the team," Fred replied. "You were so keen to be chosen."
"Nah, I knew I didn't have a shot as a Beater," said Lee with a shrug. "Had my hopes set on Wood moving positions so I could be Keeper. But I'm thrilled it was you lot, really. After what you did for Angelina, who would doubt your abilities?"
"I think they all doubt our abilities," said George.
He scanned the common room grimly. Fred followed his brother's gaze. Everyone was wearing skeptical looks as they handed the newspaper back and forth, including the Quidditch players — Shep Quarter, Oliver Wood, Simon Graham and Colum Briers. And, as always, Percy was scowling in their general direction.
"Half of this room is deciding whether we're good or bad for Gryffindor, what with the paintings being erased," said Fred restlessly.
"They're blaming you for that?" Lee objected.
"No, not yet. Filch was peeping more than usual at dinner last night," said George.
"And the portrait of the Fat Lady gave us the evil eye, just then," Fred continued.
"Well, you've earned twice as many house points as the rest of the first years combined, so no one should complain. Have a look at the paper. If I was in your shoes, it would make me feel better. Can't imagine seeing my name in print." Lee offered them his copy of the Daily Prophet. When they couldn't find their article, he pointed to the one titled, The Three Scandals of Hogwarts and What's Being Done About Them! We'll Give You a Hint — Nothing.
"Hang on...we're one of the three scandals?" Fred griped.
"How is that supposed to make us feel better, Lee?" asked George severely.
Their short friend shrugged, the corners of his mouth rising. "At least you're not the only scandal."
Sighing, the twins took hold of the newspaper. The article read:
Another school year is well underway and Hogwarts is mired in controversy, yet again. Unless you have been living under a rock (regrets to our readership in troll territory), you will have heard that the post of Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher has yet to be filled. And while the Wizengamot meets this week to vote on the recent Decrees of the Minister, neither addresses the educational vacuum at the school for wizardry. Millicent HAGNOLD (to which she is still being referred) was visiting Hogwarts yesterday to discuss the matter with headmaster, Albus Dumbledore. Officials close to the Ministry claim that Bagnold became distracted by another tragedy — this time in the form of precious magical artwork being erased by foul spells unknown. A member of the Dark Force Defense League, who would prefer to remain anonymous, was on hand to comment on the recent calamity.
