THE SPARROW FALLS
The twins awoke the following day to an irascible Gryffindor prefect kicking their legs.
"Morning, Charlie," Fred hummed semi-cheerfully.
"What have I said about being out past curfew?"
"She's the one you should be kicking," said George sharply, as he rubbed his leg. "If she weren't so fickle with the password..."
"It's also hard to keep track with you changing it all the time."
Charlie kneaded his forehead distressfully. "I explicitly chose a password that would be easy to put to memory. Especially for you two."
"It has to do with Quidditch, right? We tried all of 'em," Fred complained.
"It's Quidditch. The password is Quidditch."
"Ohhh!" they replied, standing.
"Might as well sleep in. You've missed practice. Wish I'd seen you here on the way out. I can only provide cover for so long, you know. If you want to remain on the team, lads, you might want to start taking it seriously."
"Sorry, Charlie."
"We will."
He ruffled their hair and they entered the common room together. After getting dressed and eating a hasty breakfast, Fred and George gathered their supplies and left for Potions. Snape was more furious than ever, tossing things intermittently aside as he rifled through his desk drawers.
"Good morning, Professor Snape," said Cedric from behind them, as they entered the classroom.
"Sit — there are three bowls before you — the centermost bowl is filled with the eyes of newts and toads. Separate them accordingly — newt eyes are slightly larger," he exclaimed, drilling each sentence as he shuffled from one drawer to the next.
"What's wrong with him?" George asked Angelina and Lee, as he joined them at the table.
"Beyond the usual, that is," Fred added.
"Apparently Snape's Mayhem Orb went missing during the break," Angelina said in a low, interested voice. "He's furious that someone stole it."
Once they crammed their schoolbags under their seats, the twins eyed the gruesome bowl of lifeless, slime-coated eyeballs and chose instead to consult the Marauder's Map. Although everyone on their list of likely perpetrators was acting quite normal for a Tuesday, there were two ink dots on the map that kept their attention.
From the instant they had entered the common room that morning, the twins noticed that Nymphadora Tonks, the Hufflepuff Quidditch Captain, had been tracking Victor Sparrow, the known Ravenclaw rule-breaker. She followed him to the Great Hall, sat behind him during breakfast, and was now late to her first class in order to confirm that he was attending his own, making it clear to Fred and George that she was carrying out an amateur investigation with a single suspect in mind.
