THE MASTER OF MYSTERY
It was a new day in the wizarding world. The sky overhead was a swath of many colors, and the round and glorious sun began to rise over the Quidditch pitch. Golden rays of light shone down on Hogwarts castle as two pure-blood twins finally woke from their slumber. And if only Madam Pomfrey, the matron of the hospital wing, were not looking at them so sternly, the boys in white pajamas would have been allowed to smile in those tender moments between dreams and reality. But her despicable expression and ceaseless mutterings brought them swiftly back to the long and emotional visions they had seen from the Pensieve, and the sadness and sheer befuddlement that trailed along.
Fred rubbed his eyes and glanced over at his brother's bed.
"Have we been here all night?"
"All night? Make that a few nights," said Pomfrey with a curt laugh, as she bustled toward them. "Dumbledore's orders. You were quite battered. The bruises should heal up in a day or two."
George pushed himself up to a seated position and saw that Fred was wincing in pain.
"What happened?" Fred asked.
"Blame your brother," she continued. "Headmaster Dumbledore explained this utter balderdash to me when you'd arrived. I've referenced the best medical journals and spoken to the greatest magical minds in Britain, and the consensus is that nothing can be done about your changed bodies."
"Nothing?" said George in surprise.
"You'll just have to get used to it, I'm afraid..."
Fred shook his head and gripped his chest with an open palm. Feeling guilty, George sent him a mental glimpse of what had transpired in the stairwell when they were separated during the chase. Fred looked down at his new body in sheer amazement, almost unable to believe it was not in worse shape. Then George felt a sting in his ankles and quickly recalled the immense jump Fred had taken to catch Aruzula's pill.
"You have visitors, if you're up for it," mentioned Madam Pomfrey, as Lee Jordan and Angelina Johnson raced in through the open doors. Their solemn and enthusiastic expressions told the twins that their time in the infirmary had been very long for those who had lived through it all.
"We heard what happened with Aruzula," said Angelina hurriedly. "Well...what Professor McGonagall was willing to share with us."
"We were both so worried," said Lee. "And I had to be stuck in Kettleburn's mechanical spider web for hours. Which was actually brilliant, so...I suppose I don't mind too much."
"That time went by in several very fast seconds for me," Angelina added with a chuckle, recalling how the investigator had locked her in the warped time of the Meantail's song.
"So, is it true? You...er...switched bodies?" Lee asked. The boys nodded, looking silently concerned. "Wicked!"
"Well, there's a new article in the Daily Prophet you might want to see," said Angelina, as she brought it out from under her arm.
