“Changing the subject Natasha Everly!” I said scandalised. “What is the gossip on this guy?”
Tasha’s pager went off and she looked at it, “The scans are in, let’s go.”
I nodded without second thought getting serious. Her pager went off again.
“It’s Connor,” she said and we immediately changed our path to walk back to Connor.
Once we arrived I saw an even more worried Hope and Louis and a nurse with Connor.
“He’s broken out in a fever,” the nurse informed us, “It’s almost hit forty degrees.”
“Okay, it’s definitely looking like appendicitis,” Tasha said and the she turned to Hope, “Has he been eating less, vomiting, diarrhoea or constipation?”
“Umm this morning he said he wasn’t hungry but I haven’t noticed anything else.”
“He did diarrhoea last night,” Louis added.
“Okay, we’re going to go check the scans but I’m ninety nine percent sure that it’s appendicitis.” Tasha turned to the nurse, “Book us an O.R. for an appendectomy.”
“Wait he’s going in for surgery?” Hope asked.
“Bella explain to them whilst I go get the scans,” Tasha ordered and I nodded.
“Bella, what’s,” Hope trailed off looking at Connor worriedly.
“Hope, stay calm. Connor has appendicitis, which means his appendix is inflamed, which means his appendix could burst. Appendicitis isn’t uncommon in children but it is an emergency case. We have to take him in surgery now. The surgery is fairly easy and if we don’t do it straight away he could,” I gulped, I didn’t want to scare them but as Connor’s doctor I had to tell them all the facts, “His appendix could burst and it’s contents could infect the lining of the abdominal cavity, which can be fatal.” A nurse handed me a clipboard with the permission forms to do the surgery, “I need you to sign this. It just says that you give us permission to operate on Connor.”
“You think he needs the surgery?”
“Yes.”
Hope nodded and signed the form without a second thought. I handed it back to the nurse so she could put it wherever it needed to go in the Connor’s file.
“It’s definitely appendicitis,” Tasha said coming back to Connor’s bed. “Start prepping him for surgery,” she told me. “We’re booked in the O.R.” Then she pulled me aside, “We’ll do a laparoscopic procedure, he’s little so I don’t want him to have to much scarring. So just make sure you know what you need to do.”
“I’ve done a million appendectomies back at the hospital, I’ll be fine,” I told her.
“Just making sure, now give him some meds for the pain and fluids but other than that he can’t eat or drink anything.”
I nodded and went to a medical cabinet to grab all the medications and medical equipment I would need. An IV bag with fluids in it and the connecting tubes, I grabbed a needle, a syringe and a few other necessary things and put them on a small table with wheels. I wheeled it back to Connor’s bed and started hooking him up to the IV bag, which would give him fluids and medication to help with the pain.
