April had already left for work and I was all on my own. So I went online and started looking into uni courses at a few of the universities in London. I was trying to find the same course I did back in Australia so I could transfer.
My phone started buzzing and distracted I answered it.
“Hello?”
“Hey, Bella,” April said happily, “So I was talking to the Chief today and he’s willing to let you back into the program!”
“But I don’t want to be a doctor anymore,” I protested.
“Look I know you want to go into what Nate was doing but you were born to be a doctor! You are one of the best on the program!”
“Not anymore,” I sighed, “April I haven’t done a surgery in six months.”
“Aren’t you just itching to do one? Come on, Bella. You know you miss being a doctor,” April tried to convince me but I shook my head.
“I don’t know,” I said biting my lip, “I don’t think I have the heart for it anymore. Too many people die and I’m sick of being the one to see it all the time.”
“Just promise me you’ll think about it,” April said urgently and I sighed. I’d think about it though I didn’t think I’d go back.
I couldn’t handle knowing that because I couldn’t do more I ruined people’s lives. ‘Sorry but your spine’s been crushed and you’re paralysed’ or ‘Sorry your husband’s tumour is too aggressive, he only has a month to live’ or ‘Sorry your daughter didn’t make it through the surgery that was meant to help her’. I couldn’t do it anymore.
I’d only realised after Nate and dad died how much pain I had caused people. When I was in their shoes I realised. I hated the my dad and Nate’s doctor so much that I couldn’t even remember the man’s name. I didn’t want to be a deliverer of bad news.
“I’ll think about it,” I told her. I checked the time and cursed, “I’ve got to go. I’m meant to meet up with Niall in an hour.”
“Love birds reuniting?” April asked me.
“Just meeting up as friends.”
“You know he really missed you.”
“Why are you taking his side?” I snapped.
“I’m not. I’m just telling you how it is.”
“Alright, bye.”
“Bye, and Bella,” April said.
“Yeah?”
“It’s good to have you back.”
“It’s good to be back,” I smiled before hanging up.
After changing into a pair of skinny jeans, a top and coat I left the apartment and walked to Stucky’s where I was to meet up with Niall. I wondered if things would go back to the way they were and I wondered if Niall and I could ever be more than just friends.
I walked along the pathway and enjoyed the London scenery. The overcast skies, the damp streets, the older buildings. London had character and I missed it.
