Period taboo

Okay, why is the discussion of periods so weird for so many people?

Earlier today, I was getting a pad from my locker and some boys saw me. I don't know if they could tell I was getting a pad, but it seemed like they could because they were looking at me with wide eyes and fear. (When I came back out of the bathroom they'd disappeared and they'd been studying in the hallway, so I'm pretty sure they're scared of hygiene products)

So why?

Periods are just how the body functions, it isn't a big deal! Why do girls trade pads like they're drug dealing? Why do we talk in whispers when asking for an extra tampon? Why are we asked "isn't that a little inappropriate?" when discussing the fact that we are bleeding for five days a month when dudes make penis jokes all the time?

I know people who always whisper when discussing their period and treat asking for hygiene products like drug dealing, which I don't do. I'm the type of person to just carry a pad around and speak matter of factly about the fact that THIS IS HOW MY BODY WORKS CALM DOWN.

I challenge you, all you, to just be chill about periods. They aren't a big deal, and if you're a guy, please, please, don't make period jokes. I swear, our hygiene products clear a room faster than tear gas (which is admittedly pretty funny).

Continue about your business, and be chill ladies and gents (and inbetweeners)
