Instantly scrunching up my nose, I walked into the old storage shed, it was musty and fool of cobwebs. I could smell the mold growing from years of being unkempt.

"See it's not too bad." Angel said beside me.

Raising my eyebrows at him, I snorted. "Not too bad huh?"

Grabbing a broom from him I began cleaning the cobwebs from the ceiling and corners. Stopping abruptly as I felt something begin to crawl up my arm. I let out a yelp, at seeing a large tarantula spider crawling up my arm. Angel ran over, and quickly scooped it up before I threw it. My body kept getting tingly like I had them all over me now. It made me want to jump in a shower to make sure there were no more.

Angel started laughing at me, while leaning on his broom watching me scratch and squirm incessantly.

I stopped scratching at the sound of his laughter. "Don't laugh at me Angel, you know I don't like bugs!" I shouted at him.

He stood up straight and flashed me one of my best smiles. "Oh, come on, it was rather funny don't you think? Besides those spiders don't really hurt you. They might sting you a bit, but they're harmless."

I did not think it was funny. "Why do they have to be so big?" It was a rhetorical question. We learn in class that since climate change happened we were dealing with larger spiders, when spring came to early. Warmer weather meant larger spiders. I hated it personally. Giant spiders were everywhere.

"I don't even know why I let you talk me into helping you clear this space. This place is a mess." I griped crossing my arms.

"Because Ash, you're a good friend, and you wanted me to make it to your birthday tonight. If I do this by myself, well then, I could be here all day. And look we are almost done. After we are done here we can go get our training over with and set up for the party." He said, as he picked his broom back up.

I rolled my eyes, but picked my broom up and began working once again. This was not my idea for a birthday. I let out a slow breath, "Remind me never to leave my window open again." I kept my eyes ahead of me, watching the dirt slowly pile up. Suddenly water hit my face. Gasping in surprise, I turned to see Angel already dipping his hand back in the water to splash some more one me.

"You jerk," I quickly ran to my bucket, and started to splash him.

By the time, we were done, we were both soaked and the room barely clean.

Angel chuckled, "see we can have fun," he said breathing heavy.

"Yeah if you call getting soaked fun." I scrunched up my face. Meeting his eyes, I smiled, and we both laughed.

"I think that's enough cleaning today, after all, it is your birthday." He said standing up straight.

I began raising my fists in the air in celebration. About to do a cheer when I was interrupted by...

"Now let's train." He finished smirking at me, already knowing how I was going to react.

My head dropped back as I let out a groan. "Way to get a girl's hopes up." I gave him a light punch on his arm. But felt myself smile despite it. It was my eighteenth birthday, and I am happy to finally be considered an adult.

We walked at a brisk pace to the training grounds. I had been training for a few months. I did not want to, but Angel told me a girl needed to be able to protect herself. From what I had no idea. Where we live, there is never any crime. No thefts, murders, rapes, nothing.

Angel grabbed two sparring swords and handed one to me. "Let's do swords today. To help warm us up." I followed him to the middle of the training arena.

A few minutes later I am already on my back with a sword at my throat. Angel grinning at me. "Again." he said, "focus on your foot work."

I stood up and raised my sword, determined to beat him. I knew it would be virtually impossible though. He is a lot stronger than your average human. He is half human. The other half is Angelos. The last of his kind, as far as we knew anyways. He has mostly human features, no wings like is race. Angelos are the reason some old books speak of what they call Angels. Hence his name Angel. They were our first contact with aliens and we did not even know it yet.

When they announced themselves, it had changed everything. We had been on the brink of extinction due to over use of our Earths resources. They called it mass ecocide. Most of us being wiped out. The ones that had survived moved to one of the last remaining continents, Greenland, which had already begun taking precautions against climate change long before it had become a major issue.

They taught us how to use other forms of power, and helped us to slowly reverse the damage we had caused. We were still underpopulated though, and families rarely had more than one child. No one is sure about the reason for it.

Angel swung his sword, pulling me out of my thoughts. He swung hard to my right and I blocked, barely. Fainting to left then swung to the right he blocked. It was always the same. No matter what I did he always blocked or parried. Gritting my teeth, I pushed my body to move faster... and faster... my mind zoned in on him and his sword. My body almost began to react on its own. So, I let it. I relaxed and felt my body move faster. Then his sword flew out of his hands, my sword just stopping at his neck.

My mind went blank. I saw shock across Angel's face. I am shocked myself. I don't know what just happened. It was like something took over my body. Some power I have never felt before. It was exhilarating.

Angel began rubbing his chin in thought.

I heard applause from outside of the ring. We had grown an audience. I had not even seen the soldiers arrive. One of them let out a whistle, and heard one of them say, "it's about time someone kicked his butt." Another say, "just wish it had been me."

"I think we will stop training there for today. I forgot I must meet with General Flynn. Sorry Ash." Angel said.

I barely heard him, still trying to figure out what just happened.

A man about Angel's age came over. He grinned at me, a goofy sweet sort of grin. "Hey Ash, Angel? You have trained her well huh?" He said to Angel, who nodded in response.

"Yeah she has been doing good."

"I noticed! You going to try hand to hand with her today as well? I want to watch in case she kicks your ass again. It must have been humiliating to get beat by a girl, and not just any girl a human to boot." He sneered. Some of them were jealous of Angel's strength.

"Someone would have beat me eventually. She is the only one here good enough to have ever done it." Angel said in retort. Sneering back at him.

I groaned, "hey if I am done here, then I am going."

They stopped talking and looked at me as if they had forgotten I was there. I rolled my eyes. I hated listening to them ruffle each other's feathers. Men could be so annoying.

Turning on my heels, and leaving not wanting to listen to the rest of their conversation, as soon as I am out of sight, I started running to the other friend I have. Though this was a small base or town, I could never tell, there were still a few other girls, though we did not really get along. Most of them had visited the capital, and were very engaged in the latest fashions and gossip.

I had never been there, and really did not care about those things. Instead I cared more about reading and daydreaming. The same as my friend Avril.

When we first met, I was ten, and her family had just moved into our little village slash base out of the capital. She was a little older than me, but we had managed to become fast friends.

Today was her day off, so I knew she would be at home with her nose stuck in one of those cheesy romance novels she liked so much.
