Emily's P.O.V

Shawn doesn't show up school that day. In fact he doesn't come to school for the next two days straight and it's like he was never there in the first place. It turns out that I share three classes with Shawn: English lit, languages and also music class. Although I have yet to see him actually show up for music.

There was a slight talk around the school at first to why Shawn hadn't shown up to class on Tuesday morning but that soon dwindled down to hearing nothing of him mentioned. Even his brother, Stefan, had been forgotten and left to carry on his school days quietly. High school moves on quickly to new more interesting gossip but I've never seen it happen like this before. I however couldn't shake the feeling that something wasn't right with the Salvatore brothers. I couldn't tell you why I felt that way though I just knew.

For some reason I've always had these strange gut feelings towards people. Other people decide if they like someone based on their first impressions of them. I however get my opinions on my gut feelings. For example; when I was five my parents tried to leave me and my sister with a babysitter who I took an instant disliking to. I had no reason to hate this girl but five year old me just knew something bad would happen if we were left with her. After two hours of me screaming my parents ended up staying home that night and a week later that same girl got arrested for stealing during a babysitting job.

"Earth to Emily, are you listening?" Becca's hand hovers in front of my face to get my attention during lunch on Wednesday.

Blinking I glance around my group of friends noting their stares. Tyler, Kaylie, Ryan and Rebecca are all watching me with curious expressions on their faces. This is the third time today I've zoned out on them and I think I'm starting to either worry them or piss them off. Personally I'd go with the latter.

"What is wrong with you today?" Becca frowns. "You've been acting kind of weird all day."

"Sorry I'm just tired." I lie. Noting how Stefan just sat two tables down from us in the cafeteria and no one battered an eyelid his way.

"Did I ever mention you're a terrible liar?" Tyler adds.

"I'm not lying it's just...I just...I mean-"

"She's totally crushing on the new guy." Ryan laughs shaking his head in amusement.

"I am not." I say at the same time Tyler blurts, "Are you serious?"

"Explain to me why you keep cutting glances at Stefan's table then?" Ryan grins mischievously while taking a huge bite out of his sandwich.

"I do not." I blush feeling embarrassed that I'm being that obvious. "I'm just wondering why Shawn hasn't turned up to class when he looked fine the other day by the lake."

I told my friends what Shawn said by the lake on Tuesday. Apart from Becca who likes to stew over things a little longer than normal the others seemed to accept his apology for embarrassing them. I didn't however tell them how I get this strange vibe off both Stefan and Shawn because I can't really explain what I feel myself.

"Maybe he really is ill." Kaylie shrugs. "I mean it's not uncommon for someone to feel sick, especially when you start a new school."

I'm about to object to that fact I know it's nothing to do with first week nerves when my eyes involuntary trail over to Stefan once again. Leaving my friends to bicker about Shawn and their afternoon classes I watch Stefan more closely.

He's still sat two tables down from us but there are now a scattering of about six or seven other students sat with him. On closer inspection I realise it's some of the guys from the basketball team. They're not really sat with him though, I mean yes they're all sat on the same table, yet Stefan doesn't talk to anyone and he sits slightly away from them which I find a bit strange. If you want to make friends in a new school you try your absolute hardest to socialise with whoever you can but Stefan just ignores them. Unless he's just shy then that's understandable, maybe he doesn't feel that friends connection towards them just yet.
