"Raeleigh, let's go, get out of the car we have to go inside the school"
My head was pressed onto the cool glass of the passenger seat window and I gazed up at the big brick building before me. My mother gave me a nudge and I opened the door and stepped onto the pavement. The dark building loomed over me and the students in crisp blue and white uniforms filtering into the school seemed daunting. No girl wanted to start her senior year in a brand new school, let alone a whole new state where the kids were rich and preppy and entitled.
Back in New York I had attended a prep school that was similar to this solely in the appearance of the building and the private title. We weren't required to wear uniforms and the kids there we unique and talented and open minded. I felt at home there, among the array of outcasts that seemed to craft such a colorful mosaic of personalities and beings.
My mother ushered me up the stairs and we entered the building just as what I would assumed would be the first period bell rang. Students swarmed around us, some giving me questioning looks or checking out my outfit from head to toe noticing that I looked nothing like them in my plain skinny jeans and high top converse. Other students brushed past me without so much as a glance, running to meet their friends and talking animatedly about what they had done over the weekend.
I was not looking forward to being he new girl here.
We reached the principles office where we got quickly acquainted and were soon on a tour of the oh so historical and academically prosperous building. I tuned out the principle as she showed us around and took my own mental tour of the new school. I took notes of where the bathrooms were located in proximity to the classrooms and whether the water fountains looked clean enough to drink from. Though the school was old you could tell a lot of money went into fixing it up - money that probably came from the students successful parents.
My family was well off and my dad had an amazing career but I was nothing like these kids - they came from old money; probably half the kids in the school were born with a silver spoon in their mouth and didn't have to work for anything.
As we walked past the classrooms I peered inside and stole glances at my future classmates. Bleach blonde heads were all I saw. I knew some of that color came from the widespread surfing community that filtered into the school but I knew the rest of those blondes just had a nice hairstylist who fixed them up at a fancy salon every other week.
The principle took us into the library and I decided that if I was going to have to go to this school, this was the place I wanted to spend all my time. Books were stacked ten shelves high and students sat at tables with their noses buried in books. I stole away for a moment while my mom was engrossed in a serious talk about the dress code with the principle and walked down one of the many aisles before me. I let my hands glide over the well kept books feeling the texture of well worn classics. I reached the end and turned to the right while gazing up at the chandeliers that cast soft light down upon the library.
I was so caught up in my own amazement that I didn't have the time to look down and catch myself before tripping over a student sitting on the ground. I caught my balance quickly and muttered an apology while I brushed my hair out of my face. The student stood and grabbed hold of my arm lightly stabilizing me and asking if I was okay. I looked up to answer and met the bright blue eyes of a boy about my age. He was several inches taller than me and my head was tilted slightly upward as I stared at him. He had an impeccable jaw line that was sharp and strong and complimented his jagged cheekbones. His bright eyes were contrasted against his jet black hair-a refreshing change from the clan of blondes that seemed the rule the school. His crisp white shirt was buttoned up and his tie fell just to his waist where his pants were held loosely by a black belt. I could see his suit jacket was sitting on the ground next to the book he had been reading and as I looked down at his hand gripping my arms I saw his white shirt was rolled up to his elbows and the veins in his forearms were visible.
"I'm okay." I whispered, answering his question. I continued to stare.
"Do you go here?" He asked, loosening his grip and letting go of my arm. "You're not in a uniform so I can't imagine you do."
"No I'm don't, at least not yet." I said and tucked my hair behind my ear. "I'm just touring, I'm going to be starting here next week." I answered, explaining my presence in the school.
His face broke into a smile and I got a glance at his perfectly white teeth that were set in a straight row producing a movie star smile.
"Well it's refreshing to see a new face in here." He said and crossed his arms across his chest. I could see his full biceps flex underneath his white shirts
"What year are you?" He continued with questioning me.
"I'll be a senior." I smiled at him to loosen some tension.
"Me too, maybe we'll be in some of the same classes." He continued to hold eye contact with me, his smile still intact.
I heard my mom call my name and turned to see her waiting for me and the other side of the aisle.
"I have to go," I said. "Hopefully I'll see you around when I start here, you're the first person I've met so far."
I turned and started towards my mom.
"I'm Finn, by the way." He called after me.
"It was nice meeting you, Finn." I smiled and waved, walking quickly back to my mother before I got in any trouble for wandering off and leaving her alone.
The tour rapped up, not soon enough, and we started on our way home. I still resented my parents for making me start a new school but I was hopeful that Finn might make the transition easier. The chance we would see each other often through that school was slim but all I needed right now was a friend.
My life was chaotic enough at this point.
