"Get in." Justin said sharply when he pulled up to the curb of my school. He was half an hour late and didn't even bother to apologize when I slid into the passenger seat.
I had turned down a ride home from Finn, who had offered after he walked me out from my last class. I had so wanted to say yes, having a strong feeling in my gut that there was no way Justin was going to get here on time. Instead of accepting, I turned him down politely, assured him I would be at his party this weekend, and then sat and watched him walk to his brand new Beamer and drive off.
"I'm taking you home but I'll be back at 6. Dress nicely, and don't ask me any questions, I'm not going to tell you anything." Justin said, his eyes, though covered by dark sunglasses, were fixed on the road.
"What if I don't want to go anywhere with you." I said, crossing my arms and slouching in my seat.
"Too bad," he muttered. "I already asked you parents and they were more than excited to get you out of the house for tonight. They said you haven't been out much lately." He cracked a small smile that lasted only a couple of seconds.
Instead of indulging him, I simply looked out my window and stayed exactly like that. I embraced the awkward tension that lingered in the air until he pulled into my driveway.
I got out of the car silently and slammed my door shut. The tinted window rolled down and he leaned his head out "you know the drill!" He shouted at me as I made my way into my garage. Though I wanted to keep avoiding Justin and giving him the silent treatment after every thing that happened with Selena, I needed an excuse to get out. I couldn't keep hiding inside all day no matter what was happening out there.
I had no idea what he had in mind for tonight but he said to dress nice. So, I lugged my back pack upstairs, hurried into my room and got to work.
I plugged my phone in and began to blast some pump up music while I stripped down to my underwear and made my way into my closet. It was mid august so the days were hot and the nights somewhat cool. I decided to pick something out that would be nice for both indoors and outdoors-quietly cursing Justin in my mind for not giving me more information. After a long search through my closet, I threw a loose coral dress with a low v on my bed and paired it with a jean jacket and white wedges. I hopped in the shower and scrubbed my hair clean and making sure to shave my legs and wash my face. I got out and began the usual routine of blow drying my hair. Tonight I decided to go casual with the hair so I worked each dark strand into loose curls and let them flow down my back. I did my face makeup and threw on my outfit, rolling up the sleeves of my jacket and grabbing a brown leather cross body purse on my way downstairs. It was 5:50pm by the time I made it down, so I sat in the sunroom opposite the foyer and waited to see Justin's car roll into the driveway.
To my surprise, right as the clock ticked to 6, Justin pulled into the driveway in his simple black range rover-a nice change from the sometimes gaudy cars he chooses to drive. My phone chimed a few seconds after he pulled in and I saw the familiar unknown number pop up on my screen.
"Come out." It said. And so I picked my self up, turned off the lights and gave myself one last check over in the foyer mirror before running out the door.
