Chapter 31 ~ Aftermath

* Amelia's POV *

"We don't want to go to sleep!" The twins grumbled, in their stubborn, but tired, voices. Despite being non-identical, both had droopy eyes and their heads tilted to the side as they continued to protest, ever since I brought up the very notion of rest.

I tried to suppress a smile, my own fatigue slowly catching up with me and making my limbs feel heavy, wanting desperately to melt into the ground. "You have to. C'mon, you're home now. You should be jumping straight into your bed! That's what I'll be doing as soon as you get into bed!" I tried to reason but to no avail, they wanted to stay up like children on Christmas eve.

Macy's smile curved up mischievously making me narrow my eyes. "You and Dad have made up already?"

I blinked, suddenly feeling flustered at what her tone could be insinuating. "No. I shall be staying in a guest room for now," I answered, trying to sound nonchalant before firming my tone. "But stop changing the subject. Bed, now!"

They giggled and quietly mumbled to themselves as they switched their gaze continuously between each other and myself. Even with enhanced hearing I couldn't hear them due to my own tiredness, but I could probably easily guess. "Okay, Mom. But we want to see you when we wake up," Elijah reasoned. I could hear an underlying sadness making my stomach flip and chest tighten.

I put on a smile and gave an assured nod, wanting nothing more for them to be happy now that they were back home. "You will. That's a promise, although, I don't know if you'll be able to get me up."

"As long as you're there. As long as you and Dad are there," Macy whispered, smiling wistfully.

My smile widened and I quietly guided them to their rooms but as soon as we got there, they started to protest again.

"You're not going to go, are you?" Macy asked suddenly, she used her arms to wrap around herself.

"Nope. Not going to happen. Not even your Dad is going to get rid of me this time." I doubt he would anyway.

"Good," she nodded. Her eyes caught Elijah's before they lowered. "Can you stay with me?"

"That's not fair, why do I have to be all on my own?" Elijah interjected before I could respond. I chuckled, these twins.

"You two should stop fighting over your mother. Just all sleep in the same room," a voice suggested. I looked behind me towards Max, who was rubbing his hair with a towel after having a shower. I pried my eyes away not wanting to be caught staring and back towards the twins. Macy shot me a wink and I huffed indignantly.

As soon as everyone returned home, they headed straight for the showers, which was world war three in itself. Max being one of the last ones was lucky because he could take his time but it meant I was on duty to persuade the twins to go to bed.

"Let's go to bed then!" Macy cheered, looking far too enthusiastic to go to sleep. She grabbed mine and Elijah's arms and pulled us into her room before Elijah's could pull us into his.

We were already dressed in nightwear so all we did was sink straight into Macy's freshly made bed and pulled the duvet over us. "How are you sure this is going to work, what if one of you fall off?" I asked and looked between them. They placed me in the middle and I wasn't sure if that was a good idea.

"The floor's comfy too, don't worry about it Ma," Macy assured and snuggled against my arm. I laughed softly, feeling far too pleased with the twins being beside me.
