"You think we'll ever find anywhere?" You asked, fingertips skimming the lines on the backs of pill bottles. Carl was behind you, doing the exact same thing you were doing.
"Maybe. I don't know--I hope," he admitted, a sigh escaping his lips at the end. You stopped searching for a moment, your mind a goopy mess from reading all the tiny print. It's been four hours already since a good quarter of the group (including you) made the decision to check out a nearby strip mall for supplies. Everything was dangerously low in the makeshift camp that was set up a few miles away, and you were lucky to find a CVS pharmacy near the end of the road. What a mistake, you thought, most of everything was out of date or close to it.
"It's never going to be as good as Alexandria," you mumbled, running your fingers through your unwashed hair and faced Carl. Head down in defeat. You were already tired of scouting and having nowhere permanent to stay, especially when it was creeping close to the winter season.
"Hey," Carl said, walking over to you, lifting your chin up with two fingers to look in his eyes. They were a soft blue, but serious nonetheless. "We'll find somewhere."
You knew what he was saying was to your own benefit, but you nodded anyways. Carl then wrapped his arms around you, you burying your head in his chest. He was warm, unlike the chilly atmosphere around you that attempted to nip at exposed skin. No matter how low you ever felt, Carl was there to make it at least a bit better.
He kissed the top of your head, you sighing softly. At least he's here, you thought reassuringly.
"We should probably tell the others that--" You started, slowly moving away from Carl's comforting presence.
There, at first, was a small but noticeable crackle from the long distance walkie-talkie. Carl quickly reached for it, keeping hold of your hand while he listened intently to the voice on the other end.
"Carl, (Y/N), get out now. There's a large herd of walkers coming--we must've missed it." It was Rick's ushered voice in the other end, his voice deep and slightly shaking.
"Like hell! Where' these shits come from?" there was Daryl's muffled voice that shouted on the other end--obviously too far away for the speaker to pick up his full volume.
"Oh shit, oh shit, shit!" you yelled, bringing your hands up to your head. How far were they? How many were there? Was there really any chance of making it out alive?
"Are they close?" Carl turned his back to you, almost as if he didn't want to worry you. But you were past worried, already having jumped over the counter-top from the back room and to the windows at the front entrance.
The herd was enormous, hardly being able to see the space between the dead bodies. Quickly, before they were able to sense you around, you sprinted back into the small room with all the pills, almost tripping over your own feet.
"Carl, they're everywhere," you explained, your face a worried mess.
"Dad, we can't get out," Carl told Rick after glancing at you. You stood by his side, gripping his arm, chin on his shoulder while you tried to remain calm.
"Just--just stay there. We're going to have to come back later, I--I--" it was silent on the other end while we waited for a response, Rick's voice shaking like a rattle. He was obviously scared for his son, worried that when they came back, he wouldn't be there. Even worse, he wouldn't be alive. "We'll be back tomorrow, but... Do whatever you need to. Stay alive."
