You rested your head on Carl's chest, feeling his body rise and fall with the breaths he took. The full sun warmed your skin, the grass long needles that you could hardly sense. Carl had an arm draped over your waist; he could tell you were happy by the slight smile on your face that rarely had a chance to appear anymore. He liked making you happy.

Although you seemed calm and peaceful, Carl was the opposite. He hoped you couldn't feel his heart racing against his chest. One hand found its way around you while the other stayed in his pants pocket. He twirled a ring between his fingertips; wondering if he was going to make the right decision after all.

The thought of marrying you had been in his mind for a while, but it wasn't until a few weeks ago that Carl brought it up to his dad. He was nervous, scared that he would laugh at the idea with the two of you only being nineteen. Was it too soon? Were you too young?

Carl had sat Rick down in the kitchen when he told him. "Dad, (Y/N) and I have been together for about four years already--" he paused then for a moment, wondering how to say exactly what was on his mind without being blunt. "I love her, and..."

"Carl, just say it. You don't have to explain anything first," Rick interrupted his stammer. Carl found it funny how Rick knew these things--was he really that predictable to be getting Rick situated before he said something big?

Carl took a breath and almost rolled his eyes before getting serious."Do you think (Y/N) and I are too young to get married?"

Carl held his breath, waiting for a reaction. Rick blinked a few times, somewhat stunned. There was silence for a few moments and Carl began to worry--was it stupid to ask? Should I wait a few more years? But Carl knew the answer inside him--he loved you and didn't want to wait any longer. He didn't know how much time he had to do this.

"You're young," Rick started, Carl's heart starting to deflate, "if the world were under different circumstances, then yeah. You wouldn't be ready." Carl listened intently, leaning forward as if his dad were sharing a secret. "But now, the life expectancy isn't long. You never know when you're gonna get hurt or injured or somethin'. And you say that you love her, right?"

Carl nodded surely once.

Rick smiled and patted Carl on the shoulder. "Then go marry her. You'll regret it when the chance is gone."

And there he was, a week later after finding the ring with Rick at a run-down jewelry store, staring up at the sky with nervousness as he held you in his arms. He thought about what Rick said--there may never be another chance to ask you. He didn't want to risk losing you before the next right time.

Carl shifted in his position, causing you to lift yourself off him in thoughts that he was readjusting himself. Carl sat up and you did as well, knowing that when he did this he usually wanted to talk about something.

Just like with his dad, Carl didn't know how to start. How do you begin a proposal? He wished he would have thought this through a little more before he jumped into things. But you waited there patiently, knowing Carl was thinking about something serious, and he noticed that and was grateful.

"I'm going to be honest," Carl started, "I have no idea how much time we have left together. It could be days or years and I just want you to know that I love you." You looked at Carl with confusion.

"I know," you said slowly, taking his hand. "I've known that for a while."

Carl moved closer to you so he could put your hand against his chest. "No, you don't get it. Through the world ending, Alexandria, the prison, deaths--everything, I've loved you. I really don't know how to describe it, I don't think there are words to describe how much you mean to me."

You smiled softly and Carl forgot why he was so nervous to begin with. It was you he was talking to--his best friend, lover, and soul mate. There wasn't ever anything he should be afraid to ask you.

"I wouldn't have made it this far without you. And I probably won't get another chance to do this, so--" he pulled out the ring from out of his pocket, warmth spreading through his chest at the sight of it. "Will you marry me?"

He could see you were shocked with your eyes wide open, staring at the ring, but he wasn't worried.

"You know, just to make it official before it's too late," he added.

You reached out to his neck, pulling him in to kiss you once, his lips pressing against your own. It was sweet and simple, but he could tell your answer in the air.

"Carl Grimes," you started, leaning your foreheads together. "Nothing would make me happier than to be married to you."

He smiled at you, his eyes crinkling at the edges, and pushed the ring onto your finger. It was a very loose fit, making you laugh. "It looks like it's going to go on a necklace then," you concluded with a smile. Carl looked into your sparkling eyes, making you look so beautiful underneath the sun. He couldn't believe what he'd accomplished--after years of your relationship, the two of you finally made it.

You wrapped your arms around him in an embrace, his wrapping around you. Carl closed his eyes in happiness, holding you tightly.

"I love you, Carl Grimes," you whispered.

"I love you, too, (Y/N) Grimes."
