Chapter 5: Nurse Joy at Your Service

Summer already and to make things more fun for us, the church organized a weekly youth gathering in the church since the youth are just around. In addition to that my nephews, nieces and cousins are having their summer vacation in our place all the way from the province which was more fun for the people around the church since they can get to know them more and draw them to God.

Every week was always different for every youth gathering. Sometimes we just sing songs continuously from the start until the end. Sometimes we speak testimonies and sometimes there’s just prayer and word of God. It all depends on the flow and how it goes. We were all thinking outside the box that whatever is the flow according to the Holy Spirit, we just let it be.

It starts at exactly seven in the evening and ends randomly. Sometimes since we were all enjoying the atmosphere and the program we did not realize that it was already 10 in the evening. Due to curiosity of some parents they decided also to join to find out what the youth are doing.

There was one unforgettable moment during summer vacation that it rained really hard. Rains, storms and typhoons are well known in the Philippines. There are no seasons like spring, summer, fall, winter but the season here in the Philippines are Dry Season and Rainy Season.

During the time that it was raining, me and two of the members with me went out to buy some necessities for the church. We came late and saw that the church was not doing well since the structure was not prepared that time for strong rains. The church was filled with puddles of water inside and everyone volunteered to wipe it all before starting the youth gathering.

While I was still at the door greeting everyone and was about to go inside, Rose suddenly spoke to me and said “Hi Joy! Good thing you arrived, go inside in the office you have a patient waiting for you. Take a look and take care of him, he really doesn’t look well.”

I stepped inside wiping my sandals in the rug and went inside the hall and looked around and placed my bag in the side near the stage. The chairs were all piled up in the side while there are rugs and pail of water with mop in it. The youth were cleaning around the hall to start off as soon as possible. Everyone were working together mopping and wiping the floor while the others were setting up the sounds.

I went through the door inside the office to see who was in the other room. I saw little children playing in the side along with my brother. I continue to look around and there it was, beside the table in the carpet a mat was placed and there was Blake lying down. He was wearing his black jacket and I could easily notice that he was shivering from cold. I was deeply in compassion when I saw him and sat beside him.

"Blake, how are you?" I said with such worries in my words.

"Here I am, not doing well.” He replied to me with a soar voice

I extended my hand to his face and checked what his temperature and when I touched him, he was burning hot, “Blake you’re burning with fever”

I rushed to get my bag and took my long two-toned scarf and placed in on him. There was a paracetamol, a medicine for fever, in my little medicine kit I always carry and took a glass of water.

“Blake here is your medicine. Would you want to drink now or drink it later?” I asked him holding the glass of water and the paracetamol.

“I’ll drink it later just place it in the table” he replied.

I sat beside him holding his face and said “Don’t worry, I am here, I’ll take care of you.” Then I prayed for him to get better soon.

I was looking at him the whole time, he was sweating yet we has still shivering, how his face was so pure and so clean.

He was so handsome even if he was not feeling well, how he looked at me and I looked at him, our eyes were meeting each other. There was pure silence yet our eyes were speaking to each other than our words of mouth and there he smiled and closed his eyes and went to rest.

I was just there beside him then Rose called me up, "Joy, let's start" she said to me.

"Alright then, I’ll be right there" I replied excitedly

“Blake, after the gathering, I will come back for you, take your rest” then I left and went to the hall.

During that time I was just worried about him yet I never let myself be distracted. After the youth gathering, I rushed back beside him and checked him out, he was resting quietly. I was looking at him resting calmly and his shivering had stopped. I saw in the table the glass was already empty and that the medicine wrapper was already opened. He drank his medicine.

We took a ride with Misty and then Misty initiated that we sent him home. He was sitting in the back of the passenger seat while I was on the back of the driver’s seat and my cousins were in the third row. We sent him all the way until to the gate of his house. After he went inside we already left. There was already peace in my heart when he went inside their house.

The following Sunday he was already there in the church walking around. Sunny Sunday since the typhoon had left the area. I approached him and said “Hi Blake! How are you already?”

He looked at me and smiled, “Hi Miss Vista, I am well already, thank you very much for taking care of me few days ago.”

“No worries just return to me the scarf when you already washed it” I replied

We went to our own group of friends having fellowship to one another and talked randomly of different things.

The following youth gathering he called me up from afar, “Miss Vista!” he shouted all the way from the door, I was in the corner with my cousins and I saw him and walked towards him.

“What is it?” I asked him. He grabbed his bag and opened it, he pulled out my scarf and returned it to me, smiled and said “Thank you” then he left me and sat down as if nothing happened.

I took my scarf and place it in my bag, I noticed something different. There was a strong scent in my scarf. It was his perfume and he sprayed it to my scarf. I know very well his scent from afar what more that it is already in my scarf. I kept it inside my bag and continued with the youth gathering.

We went home and when I was fixing my bag when I opened it my bag already had the scent. I took my scarf and again I remember the time I took care of him. While I was reminiscing, I saw his face in my mind. The time we were both looking at each other, and then I smiled.
