She admired him from afar, smiling to herself as he went by. God, he always looked so handsome when he walked like that. Her heart fluttered when she saw his face, and her breath faltered when he passed her by. She wanted nothing more than to kiss that mischievous grin right off his face. But alas, she could not. She had to accept that she was nowhere near his ranks. He was a prince, and she was a servant. He would never even give her a single glance, even if it was only for a moment. No one ever looked at people like her, unless they wanted something for themselves. Some would acknowledge them with a slight nod, but that was incredibly rare.
She did the same thing every single time she saw him in the palace, longingly gaze at him as he slyly went about. She was probably one of the few who saw him when he hatched up a new plan and shape shifted into something useful. Unlike Thor, who boisterously strutted up and down the palace hallways, Loki was more of a quiet man, one lurking in the shadows. When they were children, she could see him giggling as he hid behind columns, waiting for Thor to unknowingly walk by. She had to prevent herself from laughing when Loki scared Thor senseless, or else they would see her. In all the years she worked at the palace, her mother taught her to never be seen and to never be heard.
One day everything changed, setting off a wild course of events Sigyn never expected. There was a grand party in the palace, filled with many military men and nobles. Sigyn never thought something could happen to her here. She just walked around carrying trays, addressing the requests of the wealthy. She never expected anyone to look at her. But someone did. He noticed her leaning against the wall, pursing her lips as she watched others have fun and waited for them to summon her. From the corner of her eye, she could see two blue-green eyes staring at her, and when she turned her head, she saw him.
Their eyes locked for a second, her hazels connecting with his blue-greens. Loki smiled at Sigyn and she quickly avoided his gaze. She could feel her blush stain her fair cheeks, her stomach releasing little butterflies. For a moment there, she thought she heard Loki chuckle in the midst of all the laughing voices around them. She dared not turn her head to check. They had already done too much already. He saw her, and broke down that wall between them. Her mother would be so angry at her if she knew. Sigyn had to keep this encounter a secret.
She spent months trying to avoid Loki. Most of the time she knew where he was in the palace, but there were times where he was in the invisible shadows and she couldn't see him. She also had an irked feeling that he was shape-shifting more than ever. Every time another person saw her or spoke to her, she quietly studied them, trying to look for some sort of hint that it was actually Loki in disguise. If her hunch was stronger than ever, she would excuse herself and leave. People like her weren't supposed to be seen by people like Loki. It just wasn't how it was supposed to be.
One strange afternoon, Odin summoned Sigyn in his throne room. Trembling, Sigyn took a deep breath as she walked through the doors into a room she knew so well. When it was empty, she always had to dust and polish the gold inside, making sure it was completely spotless every week. Now she was in there in front of her masters. While she bowed down, she saw Odin and the Queen on their thrones, Loki and Thor standing on either side of them. She tried her best to hide her quivering lips from Loki, who was staring at her in interest. She hoped that he didn't remember her from that party months ago. She silently prayed that he just saw the fright in her eyes.
"Hello there," Odin replied, trying to ease up Sigyn's nerves. "You are one of the cleaning servants, correct?"
"Y-Yes, sir," Sigyn stuttered, clearing her throat before she continued, "I clean everything except for the sleeping quarters."
"Well," Odin began, "I would like to give you a promotion, a new task smaller than cleaning this entire palace."
Sigyn was caught off guard. She never expected anything like this before. Maybe this had something to do with the servant who died in his sleep a couple nights before. He was a kind man who tended quarters, too young to die the way he did. Her mind raced back to what bedrooms he specifically did, but she couldn't remember any. She did not speak to the man that often, so she did not know any specifics about his work.
