Hidden Essence

Chapter 7

When I got back to the dorms I had to sneak in through the back door. Of course Katy was still up when I walked in. "What happened?!" She asked me excitedly.

"I think we are going out!!" I exclaimed.

"Congratulations! I knew yall would." She replied happily.

That night I slept better than I had in my whole life. For once since the accident everything seemed to be falling into place. Even if it doesn't last forever I am going to enjoy it while it lasts.

The next day I told Katy I would meet her for lunch, but I wanted to go find Skylar right now and see what is going on. I walked around for a little bit and found her sitting under a big tree on the side of campus. I sat down next to her and asked, "Why are you and Mic avoiding me?"

"Sophie the reason we are is because of who you are hanging out with." She said to me. "It's endangering us"

"What are you talking about?" I asked her slightly confused.

"I am talking about Bryan and Katy, Mic senses something bad about them. He does not want us near them while we are here." She replied.

"One Katy is my roommate I can't avoid her. Two he can't control who I hang out with." I told her. "My friends have no idea about us any ways so why should it matter." I knew that was a lie because Bryan did know but she didn't need to know that.

"Mic does have authority on who we hang around while we are here, I know you can't do much about Katy but you need to stay away from Bryan. I know you remember that Mic is our stand in Alpha until we are sent for." She said to me loudly.

"What's wrong with you do you want everyone to find out! I am keeping the secret hidden so I am not endangering us. The next time yall have an issue with me come and talk to me about it, yall are my family I wouldn't have been mad. But I am now since you didn't have the curtesy to come to me." I said to her then got up and left.

At lunch I found a note from Bryan under my door, saying to meet him after we got done eating. I said goodbye to Katy when we were done and jogged over to the woods. He was there leaning on a tree when I ran up.

"Hey beautiful I was wondering if you were going to show up." He said to me with a smile.

"No reason to ditch so what are we doing?" I asked him

"Well I know you just ate but I have set up our first date somewhere in the woods, follow me." He said to me.

"Ok well let's get going." I replied.

"Wait before we go you have to shift and follow me. What do you say?" He asked me. Answering him I shifted and darted off deeper into the woods. I could hear him laughing behind me and then he was in front of me smiling. I could hear his laughter ringing through the air it was so sweet sounding it rumbled in his chest, deep and loud. I will never get enough of his laughter. He didn't care what I was and I didn't care about who he was. We ran as fast as our legs would allow, he kept bumping me trying to get me off balance. He didn't succeed every time I tried to get him he would dart away then come right back while his laughter filled my soul.

Finally he started to slow down and I sensed we were in the deepest part of the woods. When he stopped I shifted back "Come on" He said then he took my hand and led me to his surprise. I couldn't believe what I saw he got all my favorite foods. It was the cutest little picnic I had ever seen.

"I know you love orange chicken and Dr.pepper, I also got you snickerdoodle cookies." He said to me.

"How did you know these were my favorites?" I asked him.

"Mic, I asked him about you, what you loved most, your favorite foods, and your favorite color." He replied.

"Wow I don't know what to say." I said to him I really was at a loss of words.

"Just sit down and eat, I'm sure your hungry still." He said to me.

We stayed at our little picnic for at least 3 hours laughing and talking. He told me about his life as a vampire. How blood is better warm, and drinking from animals was not as satisfying as human blood. But when vampires drink from a human they try not to kill them. He told me he doesn't want to become the monster of the legends you hear about. His strength, speed, immortality, fangs are a few things that come with becoming a vampire. He said that he was turned in 1952, as he was telling me all of this I felt a strange since of longing in my chest.

"Wow it sounds great and a little strange being a vampire." I said to him.

"I know being a werewolf is better." He replied jokingly.

"You know it, I actually love being one, it is my home my safe zone. I usually change when I get extremely scared and I don't know what to do or am extremely sad." I said to him.

"Why would you be sad Sophie?" He asked me.

"Well when I was 16 Skylar and I were attacked by a werewolf. I remember running through the woods faster than I ever had before. I could smell it no matter where I ran. Skylar was slow though so I had to drag her by her arm. Right when I let my guard down, and in that moment it attacked while I was helping her. It jumped on Skylar first, it bit her leg and I remember the smell of her blood being do strong. I jumped on its back and tried to it off her with no luck. I was flung from its back and was slammed against a tree. I was knocked out for only a few moments but it took the advantage, and went for my leg. It sank its teeth and claws into my leg. I screamed at the top of my lungs then blacked out from the pain. When I came to again we were both werewolves and we were so scared. That's when our alpha found us and taught us how to change back to human form. But the worst part is I have no memory of what happened before that night." I said all of this in what felt like a single breath. When I finished I looked at Bryan and saw anger in his eyes.

He noticed me looking at him and pulled me into his arms. "As long as we are together nothing will ever hurt you again. I will make sure of that. I am so sorry I was not there for you." He said to me as if it was his fault. But I knew he would always be there for me.

"It's not your fault and I really like the scar it gave me anyway." I told him as I lifted up my pant leg to show him the huge scar on my right leg.

"Just promise me something." He says to me.

"What?" I replied

"Know who you put your trust in. Don't reveal who you are until I know it's safe. Please there is something going on here. I studied werewolf's before I became a vampire. They don't attack random humans. They thought you were a threat but since you can't remember anything before the attack I'm going to do a little research. Just please be safe." He pleaded.

"I promise but I do know alpha said I was special but he never has told me why. I am the only multi colored werewolf he's ever heard of." I said to him.

"Well it seems he may be hiding something, and I intend to find out why." He said to me.

After we had raced back to the edge of the woods near campus he stopped and I shifted back. He lead me to my dorm, I got back just before curfew. When I walked into my room, Katy was waiting for me and I could tell something was on her mind. "Hey you ok?" I asked her as I walked to my bed.

"Not really my boyfriend Jack, you know the one from biology, well he was attacked tonight. He has been unconcise for a few hours now. The nurse said he has a huge gash in his leg and will be in ER by morning." She replied as tears were running down her face.

It sounded as if he was bitten by a werewolf. I didn't know for sure so I would need to go talk to Mic. "I have to go, can you cover for me?" I asked her.

"Ya sure, but are you ok?" she asked me.

"I am for now, but someone else isn't." I replied as I ducked out of the room.
