I slump against the chain link fence, a cigarette hanging out the corner of my mouth. I need to keep a closer eye on him. I can't have him going off with some brat after school. Plus, this way I can put off going home for another hour. I texted him to meet me here, I didn't get a reply but Grey's not stupid enough to just ignore me.

"What d'you want?" His voice, too bold for his own good, sounds from the other side of the fence.

"Why didn't you walk through the gate?" I raise an eyebrow at him over my shoulder, nodding to the front gate that's barely 5 metres away.

He shrugs, "I saw you here so I came here. Besides, I think prefer it when you're on the other side of a fence."

I tsk and blow a waft of smoke towards him in annoyance. He grimaces, directing the smoke away from him with his hand. "I'm walking you home now."

"What? Why- oh, is this about Eli?"

"He's a coward."

He groans, "This fatal flaw thing again?"

"I've never been wrong."

"There's always a first."

"I'm not wrong." Why can't he just accept the fact that he's fallen for the wrong guy? It probably had to do with his fatal flaw, the one thing that I hadn't quite worked out yet. "And because I'm never wrong, I also know that guy can't protect you."

"I don't need protection." He huffs, crossing his arms. There's something in the way he says it that tells me he remembers the last time he went off on his own. The kid can't even go get air without ending up tied to a pipe in a closet.

"C'mon. I'm walking you home from now on." He looks like he's about to protest but shakes his head, evidently deciding that it's not worth the argument because he walks round the gate to my side of the fence.

"This is my street, I'm pretty sure I can make it alone."

I just smile at him, a habit of mine that I know pisses him off. He rolls his eyes, speeding up. We get to his house, it's so... suburban. It's typical for the old houses round here, like a normal house just squashed, making it fat and short. There's a white wash over the pebbledash, with a red painted door and little plant pots. He must have a perfect family...

"Don't just assume that."

Damn, must've said that outloud. I raise an eyebrow questioningly and he opens and closes his mouth, considering how he should answer, "Just because someone has a white picket fence and a thatched roof doesn't mean that it's... that it's all... apple pie and lemonade inside." It's my turn to not know how to respond. The way he says that creeps me out, like he's describing some messed-up fairy tale. He sighs in what I can only read as frustration,

"Look, you should really go now." I stand still, deciding not to move until it suits me- hey, I'm still supposed to be the one in control here. When he sees my defiance he frowns, a tiny crease appearing between his eyebrows before he snaps at me, "piss off."

"Now, that's just plain rude." I watch the crease disappear, replaced by a look of worry. He glances up at me,

"Sorry." he mumbles. God, how can anyone resist teasing this kid?

I'm about to tease him even further but a car rolls up beside us, quiet to the point that neither of us had noticed it. I do the sum in my head: blacked out windows plus no number plate multiplied by an engine that's purr just screams expensive equals: dangerous.
In one quick movement, I shove Grey behind me, making him gasp as I put myself between him and the danger. I face the car, fists clenched and ready for whoever gets out. I almost feel good because of his presence close behind me, obviously scared. Protect, protect, protect. The same old one word mantra goes round in my head.
