Chapter 24

Eli

I'm sitting in one of dad's armchairs around his desk. He hasn't arrived yet. I sigh, slumping down into the cushion and check the time. It's 3:32pm. I've been waiting here for exactly 51 minutes now. I'm exhausted, I barely got any sleep after going to see Grey. My brain was on overdrive worrying about Grey and wishing that he was here beside me for me to keep safe. 

Finally I hear noise from the corridor, voices getting gradually louder. Dad walks through the door, followed by his flustered looking PA and a young man in a grey suit. Dad looks mad, extremely mad. When he sees me he stops before letting out a frustrated sigh and storms to the other side of his desk. I gulp audibly, sensing that I was about to feel his wrath.

"What- What's up dad?" I say, attempting to break the uncomfortable silence.

"What's up? Oh, you know. The usual. A man who tried to kill my one and only child is back and apparently able to evade the forces of a multi-million pound surveillance team." He shouts to the grey suited man behind me. The man cringes,

"We did all we could-"

"Well obviously you didn't!"

I feel myself turn cold, "You can't find him?"

Dad points an accusing finger, "They can't find him."

"We're doing all we can." The accused man says, walking forwards and placing a folder on the desk, "As I said, the surveillance tapes had been manipulated. And well, I doubt that the target has the single-handed ability to steal the tapes, edit them and then sneak the tapes into the building without being caught-"

"Wait... Hadley, when he was holding those pieces of cardboard, he wasn't really there?"

The man shakes his head, "No, he was there alright. The times, the dates, the places- they were all legitimate. But the flash of light was edited in. And in my opinion, they were edited in as the tape was recording. A simple computer command or glitch created by the person controlling the cameras could have made the light that you see in the tapes."

"So you're saying-"

Dad pinches the bridge of his noise, "He's saying that it was an inside job. He's saying that it was one of my men that did this."

"Shit..." I breathe, leaning back in the chair. Everyone stays silent for a moment before dad speaks again,

"Eli. Where did you go last night?"

"I went to go see Grey- my friend. I told him that I didn't want to be around him anymore, I mean, I didn't really plan it out as well as I coud have done so I just said the first thing that... what?" I see the anger on his face. He shakes his head, muttering something under his breath. 

"No, tell me why you're looking at me like that."

He sighs, "Tell me, Eli, who is the most powerful person this boy comes into contact with?"

"Dad, listen-"

He cuts me off, his voice louder, "Let me re-phrase, who- out of everyone in his life- is the son of a rich, influential person with the world's best body guards, security and surveillance teams at their disposal?"

I clench my jaw at his patronisation, doing all I can do not to remind him that said surveillance team were currently in the shit because they sucked at surveying.

"Eli. Answer my question."

"Me."

"Right. And now that you've removed him from your life, who does he have?"
