Ch. 3
“You’re really good for a girl and all.” Hunter said and laughed as he caught the football.
My jaw dropped and I ran over and tickled him. “What’s that supposed to mean?”
“I…just…meant…STOP TICKLING ME!” He said through a fit of giggles. “Girls can play too!”
I stopped tickling him and he fell to the ground, still laughing. I sat down next to him, laughing along with him. “Good. Cause I like football.”
“So does my brother.” He said and threw the ball in the air and then caught it.
“But you don’t?” I asked him.
He shrugged just as David came over and sat down next to us. “He’s right, you are really good.”
“You’re just saying that to get in my pants.” I spat at him then instantly regretted it.
Hunter looked up at me. I momentarily forgot he was there. “He’s gonna try to do what?”
“Ooops.” I mumbled. “Little ears around. Um…nothing.” I smiled at him.
“Why don’t you go help mom set the table?” David suggested.
He shook his head, “Uh-uh, it’s your night!”
“Go. I’ll do them for the next week.” David pointed towards the house.
Hunter hung his head. “Fine.” He threw the ball at the ground and walked inside.
As soon as he was out of earshot, David turned to me. “What is your problem? What have I ever done to you to make you so mean? Besides, you were just being nice to me earlier. What, now that we aren’t inside my house, you don’t like me anymore?”
I bit my lip and frowned. “No…” I whispered. “I’m sorry. That last one was a force of habit. I didn’t mean it. I can see now that you aren’t that kind of guy.”
“That kind of guy?” David asked, sounding a bit surprised.
I moved my hair that fell in my face to behind my ear and then looked at him. “The guy that I see at school. The complete player. The jerk. The one who is completely into himself. The one that uses every girl he has. Seeing you with your family, even just for a few hours, proves to me you aren’t that guy. So, why do you act like that at school?”
He shrugged and draped his arms over his legs, which were pulled up to his chest. “I don’t know. This might surprise you, but, when I was younger I was bullied really badly, so I guess that was just me getting back at people for being bullied.”
“Oh.” I felt really bad now. I just always judged him without knowing his whole past. I knew better than to judge him, but it just happened. I mean, look at my background, it’s not any better. “I’m sorry.”
“Don’t be. It’s done and over with.” He said a little angry.
“Look, just because that happened to you, doesn’t mean you have to be a jerk about it though. You could be a really nice guy, and you’re hot enough to get any girl you want.” I didn’t exactly mean to say the last part. I swore I thought I heard him mumble, “Not every girl.” I looked at him and said “What?”
“You think I’m hot?” He teased.
I rolled my eyes. And we’re back to that. “Whatever.” I didn’t exactly answer him, but oh well.
“David! Dinners ready!” His mom yelled from the kitchen.
He got up and offered his hand, but I refused it and got up on my own. “I guess I should probably go.”
