Ch. 50
“Peyton Marie, get down here right this instant!” I heard mom slam her keys onto the stand by the door. “You’re in so much trouble, young lady.”
I groaned and buried my face deeper into David’s chest. I could feel his laughter through his chest, so I smacked him. “It’s not funny!” I grumbled. “I don’t want to go down there. Besides, you said that you would take full blame.”
“I tried to. I thought I did.”
I sat up. “No, I knew she wouldn’t just let you have full blame. It’s because she doesn’t know that you’re here.”
David had done as he said he would do, which is stay with me. We were lucky enough to not have to deal with Tim when we got here. Instead, Tim was in the man cave downstairs, either watching TV, playing some video game, or sleeping. Not like I really cared which one it was, though. I preferred it that way. It made it easier to sneak David in. “Peyton! Now!” Mom yelled from downstairs.
“I’ll be right back.” I said and crawled out of my bed. It was torturous to do that, though, because my bed, and David, were nice and warm. On my way out of my room, I grabbed the closest sweatshirt, not thinking that it was David’s, and threw it on. I walked down the stairs and found mom in the living room, pacing back and forth with her hands on her hips. “Yes, mom?”
“I told you straight up that I did not want David driving you home. I do not appreciate him calling me earlier to tell me he was taking you.” She said. “I specifically told you I wanted Tim to bring you home because I don’t trust the two of you together anymore.”
“Well, I’m sorry mom, but he was already up at the hospital, so I didn’t see the use in Tim coming up also.” I turned to walk away but mom grabbed my right shoulder, stopping me.
“Uh-uh.” She said. “Not so fast.” I turned around and faced her. “What has gotten into you, lately? I used to be able to trust you and know that you would listen to me, now you don’t do that.”
“Well, you don’t listen to me so…” I trailed off, shrugging.
“Yes I do.” She heaved a sigh. “I just don’t agree with what you’re saying.”
I looked at her. “Am I done here?”
“No.” She said. “Why do you have on David’s sweatshirt?”
“Duh, mom, I got cold in the hospital and he leant it to me.” I rolled my eyes. “I just forgot to give it back to him when he dropped me off.”
She crossed her arms over her chest and stared at me. “I don’t believe you.”
“What?” I gasped. “Why not?”
“I already told you why. I don’t trust the two of you together, so when it comes to anything to do with either of you I don’t trust you.”
“Well, I’m here at the house, aren’t I?” I copied her look. “You didn’t trust that David would bring me back here.”
“Yeah, but that’s exactly why I don’t trust it. I know that David didn’t want you to come here because he’s the one filling your head about these things happening with Tim, so he’s in your room, isn’t he?”
“No, mom, he’s not.” I narrowed my eyes at her, but my heart started racing. I was never too good at lying. Not when it came to certain things, anyway.
She brushed past and started up the stairs. “David!” She yelled. “David, I know you’re up here.”
“Mom!” I yelled, going after her. “Mom, stop! You’re acting like a crazy person. Why does it matter if he’s here or not?!”
