Ch. 43
~Peyton POV~
“That bastard!” Ally yelled and slapped my phone in my hand. “There is no way he can possibly get out of this one.”
“But he did.” I whispered. I don’t think my voice would go any higher. I was in too much shock.
“Babe, come on. We’re not going to let him hurt you. There is no way you are going back there.” Ally lowered her voice, realizing how I was reacting.
“She’s right.” Jules said and must have gotten up off of her swing. Honestly, I wasn’t seeing much of anything. I had been staring in the same spot for so long, that’s all my vision was focused on and nothing else. I felt arms go around my shoulders. “We’ve got you.”
I shook my head. “Mom will drag me back to that house. She’ll make me stay there. She’ll find a way to make me stay there, anyway.” I didn’t want to. I wanted to go anywhere but there. Especially knowing mom wouldn’t stay off of work too long. I’m assuming she has taken time off of work due to all of this.
“We just won’t let her.” Ally tried to rationalize with me. “We’ll stop her even if she tries to physically drag you there.”
“It’s not worth it.” I said; my voice still so low I’m surprised they can even hear me at all.
I was snapped out of my staring when my phone rang. It was really David this time. I answered it and then turned it on speaker phone. “Hey.” I said.
“Peyton? Hello?” He asked, sounding very confused. I guess my low voice made him wonder if the connection was bad or something. “Are you there?”
“She’s here.” Jules said. “She said hey but you couldn’t hear her from talking so low.”
“Umm….Hey Julie. Wait, am I on speaker phone?” He asked.
I nodded, not thinking about him not being able to see me. Ally sighed. “Yes. You are, you nimrod.”
“Oh, hello to you too, Allyson.” He said, knowing she hated when people, especially him, called her by her full first name.
She rolled her eyes. “Don’t even go there. Look, is this important? Peyton is sort of in shock right now and we can’t get her to talk.”
There was a pause on his side. “Is everything okay? Did something happen?”
“You could say that.” Ally was being very vague on purpose, knowing it would irritate the crap out of him. My eyes snapped up to her and I shook my head, warning her not to tell him. I wanted to be the one to tell him, and be there when I told him so that he didn’t make any rash decisions.
“What!? What happened?” Panic was clear in his tone.
Jules sighed and snatched the phone from Ally, who had taken it from me. “Just…come down here to find out. Ignore Ally. You know how she is.”
“I’m on my way.” He said and hung up, I’m assuming. Which, I was right. When Jules handed me my phone, it was back on the home screen.
Ally sighed and crossed her arms. “You always take the fun out of everything!”
“Well, I mean, come on now. You know how David is. He would instantly jump to the worst conclusions. That’s not very nice.” Jules scolded Ally. “And besides…he has been good for Peyton and you promised to try and be nice to him.”
“That was before he used her for a dare.” Ally retorted.
Jules walked back to her swing. “Just do it, for once, without arguing. Please?”
