Ch. 14
“It’s still coming down pretty good out there.” I said, moving away from David’s window. “I thought for sure it would have let up by now.” Just as I said that, a loud crack of thunder shook the whole house. The wind was picking up a little bit too.
“Is it going to be a tornado?” Hunter asked sounding a little bit scared. He was lying on David’s bed, half asleep, but his eyes grew brighter with fear, asking that.
David reached over and ruffled his hair, “No kid. It’s just a bad thunderstorm.”
Hunter nodded. I walked over and grabbed my phone. It was almost 8 o’clock. Wow how time flies. I sighed and sat on the bed behind David and leaned against his headboard. “I guess I’m going to have to drive home in that mess.”
He laid down, causing his head to be in my lap, and looked up at me. “You could just stay here.”
I laughed, but it had no humor in it. “Yeah, and get into trouble for staying over? I don’t think so.” I started playing with his hair. I mean, it gave me something to do, and I could never sit still. “Thanks for the thought though.”
“Hey, I’m sure your mom wouldn’t mind. She’s rather you were safe, right?” David asked.
I thought about it. “Yeah, but if Tim is anywhere near her, he’ll change her answer real quick.”
“Just give it a shot.” He pushed, but I wasn’t going to argue this time. I really didn’t want to drive home in this rainy mess, plus, I sucked driving in the rain in the daylight, let alone the night. To add to it, I was out in the country and all; anything could run out in front of me. I pulled out my phone and text my mom, explaining that David lived out in the country and it was a decent little drive from his house to ours and that it was raining like crazy. I didn’t realize I was holding my breath until she texted back, saying it was okay, but I had to be home first thing in the morning. I was completely surprised, but at the same time, I couldn’t help but smile when I sat my phone back down. David raised his eyebrow at me, “So…I’m going to take that smile as a yes?”
I rolled my eyes, “Yes, she said it was fine, I just have to be home first thing in the morning.”
“Told you it would all be okay!” He grinned at me from ear to ear.
I smacked his chest, “Shut up! You’re so cocky!”
“I know.” He leaned up and kissed me. “I guess I should go put the kid to bed. He’s out like a light.”
Glancing over at Hunter, I saw David was right. He was knocked out cold, and it seemed like nothing would wake him at this moment. When David picked him up, he stirred a little, but didn’t fully wake up. He carried him out of the room and into his own room. While David was out of the room, I sat there and thought about what was about to happen. I was about to stay at his house tonight. At the thought, my heart sped up and I started to panic a little, but at the same time feel so giddy. I was about to stay at my boyfriend’s house. This was all new to me. We never even asked his mom. What if his mom isn’t okay with it? Why did I always psych myself out with all of these useless questions when it came to anything?
Taking a deep breath, I told myself trying to calm myself. It sort of worked, but it took a couple more deep breathes before I was actually calm, or calmer than I was. It wasn’t that big of a deal. So I was staying at my boyfriend’s house; that didn’t mean anything would happen. Or did it? I wasn’t sure what the protocol was for something like this.
There was a knock on David’s door, kicking me out of my panicking thoughts. I looked up to see his mom standing there. “Oh, where’s David?”
“He’s putting Hunter to bed. He fell asleep in here.” I smiled at Linda. “Um… I have a question.” I said and played with my hands in my lap, squeezing my fingers nervously.
“What is it, honey?” I think I scared her by the way I said it. She looked a little scared.
“Well…it’s obviously storming really badly out there and I was wondering if you minded if I stayed here tonight. David said I could, but I feel better knowing what you say. I don’t have to. I can drive home in this…”
She cut me off before I could ramble anymore. “Sure, sweety, that’s fine, as long as your mom is fine with it. David did right in asking you. There’s hardly any visibility out there, plus it’s dark out, no sense in driving in that mess.”
“Thank you.” I said.
She smiled at me. “No problem, sweety.” David walked up behind his mom and wrapped his arms around her shoulders. He was taller than her by at least a few inches. She jumped slightly but then laughed when she realized it was him. “You’re way too quiet for your own good.”
He kissed her on the top of the head and then walked into his room. “Sorry, I can’t help that I’m light on my feet.” He said as he sat next to me on his bed.
I couldn’t help but be a little envious of their relationship. Everyone in this household got along for the most part. Sure they probably had their arguments and disagreements, what family didn’t, but they actually got along. I mean, I don’t hardly talk to my step brother unless I had to. Tim, well he’s just another story, and I hardly ever talk to my mom anymore because she’s always at work.
“I just wanted to come and check on you kids. Since Peyton is staying tonight, I don’t want you two to do something you’ll regret.” Linda said and eyed us both. “You’re still young and have a long life ahead of you.”
“Mooooooom!!!” David whined. “We know. We don’t need some speech.”
She held her hands up, “Just laying down some rules, as any mother would. I only say these things because I care about you and want what’s best for you.”
“Thanks Mrs. Joseph…I mean, Linda. No worries, though. We’re smart kids.” I slapped David’s arm for whining.
“Good to know.” She said and smiled at us before walking away. I was glad she seemed cool about this whole thing.
“You know, you’re just asking for it.” David smirked up at me.
I looked at him, giving him a shocked look, “What do you mean?”
He pulled me into his lap and wrapped his arms tight around me. “All those slaps. You’re asking for it.”
“Oh.” I frowned. “Sorry.”
I felt him laughing under me. “Yeah, you’re gonna be sorry.” He said and kissed my lips yet again. It was like my whole body just melts to his with his kiss. Instantly, my arms found their way around his neck and I was pulling him closer. I turned so I was straddling his hips, and making it easier to deepen the kiss. We were back where we started earlier, before Hunter interrupted us, except, David never put his shirt back on so that was one less thing I had to worry about.
His hands were on my waist and found their way to my skin on my stomach. Where he touched, goosebumps rose. It was so crazy the affect he had on me. He slid down on his bed so I was lying on top of him but then rolled so he was on me. In the process, my shirt had risen, so it was completely showing my stomach. His hands traced lines on my bare skin. He reached for the button on my shorts but I pulled away, and shook my head. I could see the little disappointment in his eyes, but he shrugged it off and met my lips again, with just as much passion as before.
I pulled him closer, glad that he wasn’t mad at me for not wanting to go further. Not now anyway. I was too scared, and wasn’t in any way ready at all.
