Ch. 34
I grabbed my keys off of the counter and walked out to my car. It felt really weird to be driving, considering I couldn’t for the first part of being home, and then, once I could, no one seemed to let me. Not that I am complaining, it’s just that it wasn’t necessary. I loved the rumble of my car. Before I pulled out of the driveway, I looked in my rearview mirror and saw Tim standing in the doorway. It looked like he yelled something, but I didn’t hear him. Instead, I just turned up my CD.
I blasted The Band Perry all the way down the road until I got to David’s house. He and Hunter were out front doing something in their garden, even though it was about 7 in the evening, but it was still light out. My guess is it was probably something for their mom. David glanced over and looked surprised when I pulled in. Hunter, on the other hand, tossed the shovel away and forgot everything that he was doing and ran over to my car.
“Peyton! You’re back!” He said, leaning on my window.
I chuckled and turned my car off. “I sure am. You can’t keep me away that long.”
“Can you play football tonight!?” He asked; face lighting up like he saw a new puppy or something.
“Well, I can’t if you keep leaning on my car, not letting me out.” I poked his arm.
He backed up and opened up my door. “Oh, right. That might help.”
I climbed out of my car and shut the door, locking it up. David still just looked from me to the car a few more times. “You could have called and I would have come and get you.”
I shrugged and walked over to where he was, “I know.” I kissed him on the cheek. “But I’m good. I can drive.”
“You sure…I mean, it won’t be too much of a risk…” This was one, along with many other, downfalls to having that damn surgery. People never get off your back and keep a major eye on you.
I rolled my eyes and gently grabbed each side of his face. He wrapped his arms around my waist as I kissed him slowly on the lips and then pulled back. “I’m sure. I promise. You know I wouldn’t have driven if I wasn’t okay to drive.”
He nodded and looked at the house and then at the garden and then sighed. “I have to finish this up for mom. It shouldn’t take but another thirty minutes maybe.”
“That’s okay.” I waved him off. “I can go talk to your mom.”
“Or you could play football with me!” Hunter was staring up at me. He grabbed my hand and tried to pull me to the door. “Come on! The football is in here!”
“I don’t think so.” David put his hand on Hunters shoulder. “You have to help me finish mulching.”
“But I don’t want too…” He whined.
David shrugged. “Oh well little man. You have to.”
Hunter sighed and picked up his gloves and everything to finish helping David. I couldn’t help but laugh at the two of them. Especially Hunter, for not wanting to help. I looked at Hunter, “I’ll play for just a little bit after you’re done. How about that? Besides, it’ll be dark before too long, and I don’t want to keep you up past your bedtime.”
“Okay.” He smiled up at me.
I tapped his chin with my finger and then walked inside. I wasn’t surprised when I found Linda in the kitchen. That seemed to be where she always was. Making some sort of new dish, or just cooking something. More power to her. I hated being in the kitchen, let alone cooking anything. Not that I could cook, except desserts.
