I opened my eyes and yawned. I sat up and stretched my muscles. I felt them loosen and I looked over at Ben.
"What?" I whispered in the empty tent. Ben wasn't there beside me. I let out a long breath and laid back down. I tried to remember what happened last night, but it was all blurry. Then it hit me like a train. Danny waking up, Ben punching a tree, me and Ben having-
"Hey Ashley, you up?" I looked up and saw Ben entering the tent.
"Yea." I sat up.
"Um..." Ben stared at me and I looked down.
"Oh my god!" I was shirtless and I franticly looked around. I found my top and quickly put it on. Ben chuckled.
"Don't laugh at me." I said annoyed. After a second I laughed a little too. Ben sat beside me and handed me a tray with two bowls of oatmeal on it.
"Good morning." He said handing me a bowl and spoon. I didn't realize how hungry I was until then and I scarfed down my food. Ben smiled up at me.
"You seem happy today." I said to him.
"I have lots of reasons to be." His powerful gaze never left my eyes and I blushed.
*Ben's POV*
I couldn't stop staring at Ashley, she was glowing. I saw the red color creep on her tanned cheeks and I smiled. I put my oatmeal down on the tray in front of us and I grabbed her hand.
"Are we going to talk about last night?" She asked. The events played in my head over and over.
"What about it?" I rubbed my thumb over the back of her hand.
She bit her lip nervously, "Well, was it...good for you?" I smiled and kissed her soft lips.
"It was perfect." I whispered. She smiled and we kissed again.
"We have to pack up soon." I said into her lips. We separated and started packing.
*Danny's POV*
I stretched in my cot. I felt a sharp pain along my spine.
"Ow!" I said. I reached for it and felt weird metal peices sticking out of my skin. I must be imagining things, I thought. I looked around the big, green tent and saw a girl in a cot beside me, staring right at me
"H-hi." I stuttered.
She smiled softly. "Hi."
I smiled back. "I'm Danny."
"I'm Shelby."
"How old are you?" I asked.
"15."
"Me too!" My smile got bigger. She was really pretty. She had beautiful brown hair that curled naturally around her and smooth, pale face.
We just looked at each other smiling for a few minutes until the tent opened.
"Hey, Danny." Ashley said.
"Hey, Ash." I glanced the girl next to me. "This is Shelby." They exchanged "Hellos" and Ashley sat on my cot.
She looked at me and Shelby. "I think it's time you two meet Peter."
"Who's Peter?" I questioned.
"He's sort of the leader of our group."
We all got up and followed her outside. I looked around the small camp and saw children talking in little groups or packing up tents.
We stopped in the middle of the field and a skitter rushed from the bushes, and I froze until I heard Shelby scream than I jumped into action. I ran towards the skitter and lunged at it, but I was held back. I tried at to get out of the grip but the person was strong and had me in a head-lock.
"Calm down Danny!" I heard Ashley whisper in my ear. I looked down and realized it was her who was holding me. I relaxed and she let me go.
"How did you get so strong?" I asked her.
"It's the spikes." She answered. I didn't understand what she meant by "spikes", but I decided to save that question for later, there was a more important question at hand.
"Who's he?" I gestured to the skitter in front if us. Shelby had calmed down and was now standing close behind me.
"That's Peter." She smiled.
"Why is a skitter your leader? Are you in an alliance with these things?" I started getting angry, these things killed my family and now my own sister was with them!
"No, Danny it's not like that. These skitters are no longer attached to the Overlords - the head aliens -. They hate the Overlords as much as we do, if not more. It will take time to explain it to you two, but trust me, they are Allies to us, not the enemy." She stated calmly. This new information had my head spinning a bit and I just nodded. Everything else was a blur, but I remember packing up a backpack and leaving the temporary camp.
During the long walk I made sure to stay away from the skitters in front, behind, an on each side of the group. I don't understand how Ashley could trust these beasts. They killed so many people, including our own parents! She better have a damn good reason to trust them. I huffed and Shelby looked over at me.
"You ok?" She asked.
"Yeah, I'm fine." I lied. I looked up at Ashley and - what was his name? Oh yeah - Ben. I think I remember him, he was Hal's brother I think. I wonder where he is, Hal and Ashley were inseparable. I kept looking at her and Ben talking, was she giggling? I've never seen my sister giggle ever! She put her head on his shoulder and he put his arm around her waist to pull her closer to him. What the hell is going on? I walked up to them.
"Hey, Ashley, can I talk to you for a second." I said.
"Of course Danny." She pointed to Ben. "Oh I don't know if you remember Ben-"
"Yeah I remember him." I interrupted her. I took her hand and led her to the back of the group, and we walked slowly onward.
"What do you want to talk about?" She looked worried.
"Ashley I can't wait 'til the next stop, I want to know everything I missed. And I mean everything." I gestured to Ben who stole a quick glance back at us.
She started from when the aliens first landed. Wen she told me about the 2nd Mass. and the Masons, she smiled more when she talked about Ben; I could tell she had strong feeling for him and I just hope he treats her right. Even though she's my older sister, I will protect her to the ends of the Earth, and if Ben or anyone else broke her heart they will have to deal with me.
