A/N:
I feel kind of bad since it's the season finale and it's so short, but this chapter is really just wrapping things up before my season 3 premier.
____________________*Ashley's POV*
The drive back felt longer than it did getting to the weapon. Anne was still crying, and through her tears she admitted to everyone else that she was pregnant too. Tom held her and cried silently all the way back.
We drove up to the capital garage. Everyone was quiet as they put their weapons back in the armory. There was this depressed feeling in the air, and it was getting to me too. It had finally sunk in that Dai was dead. He was one of the best soldiers I've ever met. And we had no idea what happened to Hal when he passed out after Karen kissed him. Ugh just thinking about her has my blood boiling, I just want to kick her ass.
Hal and Dai's bodies were on portable gurneys that big men were carrying behind us as we walked to the lower level of the mall-turned-capital. The citizens cheered and congratulated us as we walked by, but it didn't feel like a joyous occasion. People have died before, it's a fact that is beyond true, but I never thought Dai would be laying in that gurney. I thought that out of all of us, he would surely survive.
"Dad!" Matt yelled. He had trouble squeezing through the crowd but he made it to Ben, Tom, and I.
"Hey Matty!" Tom exclaimed ruffling Matt's hair. There was a fake cheery tone in his voice.
"So you really did it?" Matt referred to the weapon.
"Yea we did." Tom nodded.
Matt turned to Ben and I, we are standing side by side and my fingers are intertwined with his.
"Are you two going to stay?" Matt pleaded. After a pause Tom stepped in.
"Matt, Ben and Ashley have a lot of work-"
"Of course we're staying!" Ben smiled down at his beaming little brother. "I was actually thinking we could get a killer game of Monopoly going. I've missed beating you at it!" He joked.
"Whatever, Suckerfish!" Matt laughed then left to prepare the game. Tom smiled at us before running after him. Ben and I followed too, but in a slow walk.
"I'm sorry I didn't ask you first, I changed my mind last second." Ben apologized.
"It's fine. So what made you change your mind?" I looked up at him and he let out a deep breath.
"After what happened tonight, I..." His voice wavered, "I was so scared I would lose you or the baby." He put a hand on my stomach and his eyes started to water.
"Hey, hey don't cry!" We stopped walking. "It breaks my heart to see you cry." I put a hand on his cheek and he took heavy breaths to control himself.
"I love you so much." He whispered. I put my forehead on his.
"I love you more." I smiled and he chuckled.
"That's impossible."
...
I was actually starting to feel like myself again. We still don't know what's wrong with Hal, but Anne says he's just sleeping, so I'm happy about that. And I love that after all the fighting we finally have time to relax. Matt, Ben, and I are in an intense game of monopoly that Ben's currently winning and I was losing.
"Ha! You landed on my Park place!" Ben said. "Pay up!"
"Aww man! I think these dice are loaded!" I exclaimed. Ben and Matt laughed at me, and I laughed along with them. I handed Ben my last three hundreds and a fifty.
"Looks like you won't last much longer Ashley." Matt commented, looking at the few dollars on my side.
"If I can get past go the next turn without landing on anyone's property, I-" I was cut off by the room violently shaking. A light fixture fell near me and it shattered glass everywhere.
"Is it an earthquake?" I asked. The warning lights flashed red and the alarm sounded.
"No it can't be that!" Ben yelled over the alarm. Some man in a military uniform came and barged in our room.
"The general has ordered everyone to come outside immediately." He quickly spoke and left.
We got up from the table and rushed to get our shoes and coats. While I was grabbing my coat I stepped on a broken piece of glass from the light. I screamed and Ben caught me before I fell to the floor.
He carries me to the bed and gets my shoes and coat for me.
"Thanks." I say, but I'm pretty sure he can't hear me. I try to get the glass out of my right foot and gently put my shoes on. I slide on my jacket and try to stand, but the pain in my foot is too much and I fall to the floor.
"Dammit!" I screamed as I fell. Ben came over and picked me up bridal style.
"Come on Matt let's go!" Ben commanded and he followed us out. We briskly walked down the hall and outside. Ben and Matt politely pushed their way into the front of the crowd.
We were behind Tom, Weaver, and Anne then Ben gently let me down. I was able to steady myself on one foot as I watched the storm brew around me.
The wind and rain whipped my face and it was so dark it was hard to see. There was lightning and then an ear piercing screech. I held my ears tightly until it went away. I looked back up and saw - jellyfish ships? - fall from the sky. The slowed down and one landed in front of us. The door opened and a tall bipedal thing stepped out.
We were all frozen in place. What is happening? The helmet opened and a large eyed alien stared back at us. It was the strangest thing too, because I swear that for a second he smiled.
