"Ben you've been really quiet lately, what's wrong?" I asked. We were walking to our next hideout and Ben hasn't said a word.
"I'm just thinking." He answered.
"About what?"
He paused for a second. "I'm not going to beat around the bush with you Ashley. Hal and I think you should back off with the rebellion."
I scoffed "Of course Hal would say that! He keeps treating me like a kid. First he doesn't want me fighting with the 2nd Mass, now this?" I looked for Hal, he was talking to Maggie a few feet behind me. I walked back to him.
"Hey Ashley." He said smiling.
I didn't smile back, I was pissed. "Why do you keep butting into my life?"
"I don't know what you're talking about." He looked confused.
"You know damn well what I'm talking about! You told Ben you didn't want me to be in the rebellion!"
He tried calming me down. "I'm just trying to keep you safe."
"We'll don't!" I yelled then walked off back to Ben.
"Are you ok?" He asked snaking his hand in mine.
"Yea I'm fine." I lied.
...
We passed by the stone sign at the building's entrance.
"William Harrison General Hospital." I said out loud. I looked back at Maggie, she looked uneasy. Ever since she had Cancer as a teenager, she had a fear of hospitals - a fact she only shared to Hal and I.
We entered and choose our rooms. There were over 150 rooms and one to four beds in each; more than enough for the 2nd Mass. Ben, Hal and I shared a room with two beds , Matt was grouped in a room with a bunch of other kids. Tom and Anne shared a room with one bed, ever since Tom had been back him and Anne had started getting closer again.
I put my bag on the clean bed and sat down, "I like this place." I said looking up at Ben. He placed his bag beside mine and smiled down at me. "I like it too." he looked around the room, saw no one, then smiled down at me.
I started to say "What are you thinking?" but he crashed his lips on mine and we fell back on the bed. I ran my hands through his hair and used momentum to flip him over. I balanced on my elbows as our kiss deepened.
"Woah get a room!" Hal said. Ben and I sighed as I got off of him.
"We had a room til you came in." Ben said. I couldn't help but laugh a little at Ben, he was so cute when he argued with Hal.
"So what are we going to do? Did Weaver contact Porter yet?" I asked.
"Well first Jamil's gonna get the back-up generator working, but as for Porter, no, contact hasn't been made. We've been trying for months now but no new leads as to his location. I guess all we can do is wait til Weaver tells us to move out." I heard a clank and the lights came on. People cheered outside.
"I guess Jamil got the lights back on." I said.
...
I woke up slowly, though I was still tired. Ben and I had gotten back in contact with Redeye and we had snuck out every night for the past three days to work on battle plans.
I looked up at Ben. He looked so peaceful sleeping in the morning sunlight. I snuggled closer to him; he smelt amazing and he was so warm. It was odd being like this with someone, I wasn't even this close to Hal, but it felt right when I was with Ben. A few minutes passed and I was growing restless. I started tracing my finger on his bare chest. First I just did random patterns, then I started writing my name. I heard Ben chuckle and I looked up at him.
"Haha what?" I asked.
"What are you doing?" he looked down at me curiously.
I just shrugged and smiled. Then he took my hand and traced out a heart where his belonged.
"It's yours now." he said smiling at me.
I blushed and buried my face in his chest.
He took my chin and lifted it up and kissed me.
I giggled. What? I thought, I never giggle!
I looked into his eyes and gave in, "You have my heart too. I wish we could stay like this." I said hugging him.
"Me too." he said kissing the top of my head.
"Guys get up and dressed!" Hal said bursting through the door.
We both sat up, "Why? Are we being attacked?"
"No Karen's back! She's in the Psych room." he smiled. He left and I looked at Ben.
"Oh no this can't be good." I said.
We both got up and dressed then we quickly headed down to join Hal and the others in the Psych room. I looked around and saw Karen sleeping on a bed surrounded by Hal, Tom, Maggie, Weaver, Ben and I. She woke up and started panicking and Hal knelt next to her.
"Hey it's ok, I'm here." he smiled. She smiled back at him, it made me sick. I looked at Maggie, she had jealousy in her eyes, then I looked back at Karen. She looked just as she did a few months ago when we "lost" her to the skitters - she had the same blonde hair, pale skin, and piercing blue eyes. I hate to admit it, but I was hoping we would never see her again.
"Karen why did the skitters deharness you?" Tom asked.
"I-I don't know," Karen stuttered, "I can only guess I had served my purpose." She started tearing up, "I'm so sorry Tom for all the things they made me do...I didn't want to hurt you. I'm just so glad to be back with the 2nd Mass., that's all I've ever wanted."
I couldn't help it but I scoffed. Everyone looked at me but I kept looking at Karen, she shot me an angry glance then her face softened, "Ashley, long time no see." she smiled "I've really missed you, I hope now that I'm back maybe we can be friends."
"I'd rather be harnessed." I said.
"Ashley!" Hal said looking at me in disbelief. He angrily got up and grabbed me by my arm and dragged me out of the Psych room.
"Ow!" I said when he let me go.
"What the hell Ashley I can't believe you!" Hal yelled at me.
"You can't believe me? How can you believe a word she says!" I gestured to the door and Tom and Ben came out to join us.
"Guys calm down!" Tom whispered. "You both really need to stop all this fighting it's tearing you apart."
"He's the one who's-"
"Ashley what did I just say?" Tom switched to his "Dad" look so instead of fighting him or Hal anymore I left to the room.
I layed on the bed and a few minutes later Ben came in and layed next to me.
"Hey." He smiled.
"Hi." I didn't smile back so he tickled me until I did.
After we finished laughing he said "You were right about Karen. She's connected to them still, I can feel it."
I looked at him "You could feel it? I didn't."
"That's weird. Maybe you were hating her too much to notice." He poked my side.
"Stop." I giggled.
We both got up and went out for patrol.
