I looked over at Danny. Peter was gently holding him in his arms. After a few hours of walking we set up camp in a hidden field. Danny was still unconscious and I sat by him while he lay in his cot. I stroked his long dark-brown hair. It is still as soft as it had been pre-invasion. I stood up and paced the floor. Realization dawned on me. My god, it is almost a year since the aliens attacked. How did we live this far? In all the movies the big bad aliens always kill off the humans within the first few days, a month tops. Why are we so special? What did we do to deserve to live? We just screwed up this beautiful world! I'm glad the aliens came! They saved us from ourselves, they saved our world, they...
What the hell? I just realized what I was doing, I was being grateful towards the skitters! Damn these spikes! Ben walked cautiously into the tent.
"Hey, babe. You ok?" He asked. Usually I would be blushing because he called me babe, but there was so much on my mind right now.
"Hey." He said again. He grabbed my shoulders to stop me from pacing.
"Ashley are you ok?" He looked worriedly into my eyes.
"No." I choked out. I buried my head on the side of his neck and started crying.
He stroked my hair, "Shh, babe. It's fine, everything's fine."
I shook my head, "But it's not Ben! The worst thing just happened." I looked up at him and he glanced at Danny.
"He's ok right?" He asked.
"Yea he's fine, I hope. But I was just thinking about the skitters and for a second I...I was grateful that they were here. Ben I think the harness is finally getting to me."
He wiped away my tears. "It's ok, Babe. It's just part if the process. We all go through it. Fight it and it wears off after awhile. It gets better after this."
"You promise?"
He hesitated "I promise."
*Ben's POV*
I looked down at her beautiful brown eyes and I didn't want to lie to her, but I didn't want her to worry. She has too much on her plate right now to worry about the mood swings, intense anger, and depression.
"I promise." I said to her. I regret it the moment the words left my lips. God, why can't I stop lying to her? I love her, and I don't want to lie, but I hate seeing her sad. She looked hopeful and I faked a smile. We heard groaning behind us and we turned to see Danny waking up. Ashley quickly went to him and he looked up at her. He had a second of confusion on his face then he realized who he was staring at.
"Ashley?" He croaked.
"Yea, Danny, it's me." She said smiling. He hugged her tightly and tears of joy fell from both of their eyes.
I left the tent to give them their privacy. Seeing them like that made me think of my brothers. I started getting angry at myself. How could I just leave them? They needed me and I abandoned them. There was a tree near me and I stared at it as anger boiled inside of me. I punched the tree and there was a loud thud. I ignored the throbbing pain in my fist and kept pacing.
*Ashley's POV*
I laid beside Danny in his cot. "I've missed you so much Danny! I'm so sorry you had to be harnessed, I won't let those stupid aliens take you away from me again." I kissed his forehead. All of the gratefulness I had towards the skitters is gone now.
"I'm so glad I'm back with you, Ashley. I just wish Mom and Dad could be here too." He whispered.
I looked at him. "You know what happened to Mom and Dad?"
"I was there."
"What? What happened to them?"
"They...they were trying to save me. They tried to lead the aliens away from me, while I hid, and the aliens killed them."
"Damn you skitters." I mumbled.
"What?"
"I said 'Damn you skitters.'"
"What's a skitter?"
"It's what we call the aliens, Hun." I fixed his hair.
"That's pretty cool." He yawned.
"Yea, it is." It's amazing how this boy can remain happy through bad situations. He reminds me of Matty, actually. Thinking of Matt made me realize that Ben wasn't in the tent.
"Get some sleep, Hun, I'll see you in the morning." I kissed Danny's forehead again and got up. I left the tent and saw Ben laying by a tree holding his hand up to his chest. As I got closer I realized he was sobbing softly and his hand was bleeding.
"Oh my god, Ben, what happened?" I kneeled by him.
"It's nothing." He replied gruffly while sitting up.
"It doesn't look like nothing, come on." I gently helped him up and to our tent. I grabbed the first-aid kit from my backpack and got out the gauze, cotton balls, and peroxide. I put some peroxide on a cotton ball and gently cleaned his wounds. He flinched a bit, but relaxed after I put the gauze on him.
"How did this happen?" I asked.
"It's nothi-"
"I know it's not nothing Ben!"
"I punched a tree." He huffed.
"Why?"
"Because I was mad."
"At what?"
"At myself for leaving my family."
"Ben at least you have a family to leave." I was thrown back at the harshness of my tone.
"What are you talking about?"
"I just found out that my little brother saw my parents die."
"I'm sorr-"
"Please don't be." I whispered.
👉Warning: it's gonna get a little PG-13, but I promise it won't be too explicit👈
We sat in silence for a few minutes then I stared at him. In the glow of the moon from the tent, Ben's skin was glowing.
"What?" He chuckled nervously.
"You're so beautiful." I stroked his face and put my forehead on his.
Our lips brushed a few times as our breaths quickened. I grabbed the nape of his neck and crashed our lips together. Ben grabbed my hips and pulled me closer. I grabbed the edge of his shirt and he pulled it over his head.
I whimpered at the moment of lost contact, but then I looked down at him. His chest was toned and he had a six-pack. Seeing his muscles move with every breath was the sexiest thing I had ever seen. I brushed my fingers down his chest and when I passed his nipples his breath hitched. I looked up at him and his eyes were closed tightly. His head was tilted back and I started kissing his neck. When I got to the spot between his jaw and his ear he moaned. I sucked at the spot again and he moaned more. I backed away and proudly looked at the hickey I gave him. He quickly opened his eyes and they were full of lust. He quickly flipped me over and looked me in the eyes.
"Are you sure you're ready for this?" He asked, hovering over me.
I gave him a long sweet kiss. "I've never been more ready for anything in my life." I smiled.
