When Christophe and you had gotten together, he had been in a bad place. Just broken an engagement with Masumi [1] and a still born child born at 30 weeks.
He had come to you seeking solace after Masumi broke off the engagement and refused to have anything to do with the child they'd decided to have with a surrogate (they had used Chris's sperm, so he held no accountability yet). He had apparently stated he wasn't ready to be a father.
That's where you stepped in. Chris asked you to be there as the second parent for his son. He had decided to name him Daniel. You went to the ultrasounds, went to parenting classes, and moved in with Chris - after all, you loved him.
You knew his heart belonged to Masumi. It always would. They were great for each other. Yet, you loved him. Stranger things have happened, you guessed.
So, when he called you, crying, you immediately came to him. You were originally from [Home Country/City], but moved to be closer to the university you two met at, so the trip didn't take long.
"He left!" He had cried, "Said he didn't want to be a father! What did I do?!"
You were flabbergasted. You knew Chris was the biological father of the child, but it was a joint decision!
"Shh... Masumi doesn't know what he's doing. He'll... be back. I bet." You soothed, petting Chris's hair back as he clung to you.
After that, Chris hadn't wanted you to leave. He begged you to stay.
And stay you did. For weeks, you attended classes, and found new work, so that you could stay with Daniel. Chris had asked if Daniel Christophe was an okay name; after all, you were in on it now, too. You laughed and said it was a good name.
But at 30 weeks, Christophe got a call. One that would change everything.
You two sat outside the delivery room, Chris nervous, but excited.
"I'm glad you're here!" Chris had hugged you, "Our family." He started crying.
But an hour later, all that was heard was sobbing from the woman, and the door shutting.
"Mr. Giacometti... Ms. [L/N]..." He looked down, "He was a stillborn."
Christophe begged you not to leave after the burial. Masumi didn't even bother to show up.
"I love you! Don't leave!" Christophe had wailed.
You never intended to unless he asked, and you informed him of that.
Now, 3 years later, you stood as a couple, engaged, at Daniel Christophe Giacometti's grave. And Christophe was talking to his son.
"Your mother is... Pregnant. I... I hope you can forgive us." He cried, "You didn't make it... You would be 3." He kissed the tomb stone, "Happy birthday."
You quietly took his hand, and he drove into town. "[Name]..." He quietly asked.
"Yeah?" You replied, sighing.
"Do you think... He's forgiven us?"
"I think he would be happy with a little sibling. I bet he's watching over us." You tried to smile.
