This is not a modern au. It is set somewhere in the middle ages.
It was a beautiful summer afternoon. The sun was shining bright in the blue sky and there was a slight breeze. I was selling food on the market. My parents and I have a small farm just outside the village where we grow our own food, mostly fruits.
The village is quite big, it even has a castle with a royal family. I had seen them only from a distance. It was birthday I think and they drove in a white carriage through the city. I don't really remember much of it since I was like five or six years old.
Every day I go to the market with my horse, she pulls an old carriage with the food in it. I sell whatever we have left. We are not rich but we're definately not poor because we have a home, enough food and a good health. Not everyone can say that.
As I look around me I see children playing and laughing. A street musician plays on his guitar and some old couples dance to the music. It's very busy now so I'll probably sell most of the fruits.
"Hello madame." A pretty woman said with a little boy. "I'd like to have a few apples."
"Of course, fresh from our garden." I said as I give her a bag with the apples. She thanked me and gave the money.
As the people came and went I was almost sold out. Then a handsome man appeared with two others, they looked like guards or something. The man must be from a rich family then.
"Hello, beautiful." He said with a smile. I blushed a bit. "What's your name if I may ask?"
"I'm (y/n). What's yours?"
"Don't you know?"
"Oh, pardon. What did you say?"
"Nothing, I'd just like to buy something. What do you recommend me?"
"I don't have much left because I'm almost sold out, but you have to try these grapes." he nods and gave me the money, much more than the grapes actually cost.
"Thank you kindly, sir. But I can't take this."
"Keep it, because the grapes taste so good." With that he walked away to another stall.
It had been enough for today so I started to pack things up. As usual the homeless people came to me. I gave them all some food and at last I gave the street musician some too. The remaining food would otherwise just be thrown away. Such a waste.
"This is for you, an invitation to the ball tomorrow evening." A man said.
It was one of the guards from before. Does that mean the handsome man is from the royal family? No, probably not. Why would someone like them go to a market full of lesser people like me. I don't even know if I want to go to that ball. I don't even have a dress... And also not the money for one.
I went back home and showed my parents the invitation. It was a white envelop with red on the inside. The invitation looked more expensive than my house, jeez.
"But I don't know yet, mom. We don't have the money for a dress."
"That's why I'm gonna make one."
"Please, don't bother. It's just a ball, mom."
"No, you're going to the ball. You deserve it after all the hard work."
So I had to go to the ball tomorrow.
The next morning I again went to the market. It was less busy than yesterday. Probably because of the ball tonight. Everyone had to prepare themselves and apparently that takes a whole day. Well it doesn't really matter, more for the homeless, right?
"Hello again, beautiful." It was him. "I have a special order. I'd like to buy everything."
"everything?"
"Yes, I have a carriage ready to bring it with me." he walked away but turned around almost immediately. "Oh, before I forget to ask, did you get the invitation?"
"Yes, I did."
"Great, see you tonight then." With that he walked away again.
"Wait! Are you...?" But before I could finish my sentence he turned around once more and smirked. It was Prince (c/n)
~time skip~
"Your dress is ready, honey. Here try it on."
My mom gave me the dress and I put it on. It was so beautiful. It's my dreamdress.
"(y/n), there is a carriage waiting for you outside!" I heard my dad scream from downstairs.
I walked downstairs and stepped into the carriage after countless compliments from my parents about how nice I look.
"Prince (c/n) send me to pick you up, madame. We'll arrive at the castle before you know it."
We got closer and I saw people walking next the road heading for the castle. They were all dressed so nicely. My dress is nothing compared to theirs.
The carriage came to a stop and the driver opened the door. I stepped out of it and walked through the entrance into a giant hall. There was music and people dancing on the rhythm. I didn't know anyone so I went to the things I did know: the food.
There was a long table with pies and muffins etc. There was also a giant fruit plate, my fruit.
"Hello beautiful, enjoying the food?" It was (c/n) and I instantly became happy and got this feeling in my stomach.
"You say that to every girl?"
"No, only the perfect ones and you're the first." This made me blush.
"I'm not perfect."
"We shall see, (y/n)." He took my hand and lead me to the middle of the hall. We started dancing. Well I followed his steps since I didn't really know how to dance.
"They are looking at us, (c/n)."
"Just let them, they are jealous because they can't dance with a woman as beautiful as you."
Damn he sure did know how to make me blush.
"I need to show you something, (y/n)." he said and we walked to the second floor to a balcony which had a view over the whole village.
"It's so beautiful and peaceful from up here." I said.
"It is, right?" he cleared his throat. "I uhh... I'm going to marry soon."
Ouch.
"Really, with who?" I tried to hide the sadness in my voice.
"Well my parents say I have to before I become a King. They had arranged multiple visits from other royals with daughters but I always refused."
"Why did you?"
"Because they weren't beautiful. Maybe from the outside they were pretty but they don't give a shit about the people. A Queen has to care about her people. You know, like you do."
"Like I do?"
"Yes, I saw you giving food to the poor. You are a very kind person (y/n)."
"Thank you."
We were silent for a few minutes. Till I broke it.
"So when will you marry?"
"In a few months."
"And you haven't met the right one yet?"
"Oh I have met my Queen." he looked at me and smirked.
"Who is it then?"
He got closer to my face. I thought he was going to whisper something but instead I felt a pair of lips on mine. He kissed me passionately. He stopped and looked me in the eye.
"You."
