This story is set during ww2. I do not have anything against Germans I really love the people there ;). I'm sorry if anyone is offended by this story.
It was 1944 in the heat of the Second World War. The Germans had conquered Europe and everyone lived in fear.
I lived in Amsterdam with my family. We had a house overseeing the canal. It was pretty expensive but my dad was a doctor so we could afford it. Because he was a doctor we were pretty save from the Germans and they even gave us enough food. This because they needed my dad for if they got hurt.
I was waiting for (c/n) in front of the bakery. This was our meeting point for when we had to go to school. Since we both lived close to school we always walked.
"Hi, (y/n)!" I saw (c/n) waving at me and I waved back. "Shall we head to school then?"
"Yes. And oh, by the way, I have a sandwich for you." I handed him a plastic bag.
"I cannot thank you enough, (y/n)."
"No problem. We have plenty."
Like I said before we had enough food so why not give it away to those who need it.
After a five minute walk we arrived at school and the classes started. My class was shrinking each day. Nobody knew where those disappearing people went. People came up with theories. For example that they fled to England or that they were killed by the Germans. The worst one was that they were sent to camps where they had to live in bad circunstances. Everyone was afraid that they would be the next one to disappear.
After school we walked back home and on the way we saw (c/n)'s dad and his little brother. They ran toward us.
"(C/n)! Come we need to leave Amsterdam." He grabbed (c/n) by his sleeve. "Hurry up now, we don't have any time!"
"Wh-what's wrong, dad?"
"They know! Please just hurry up." He pulled (c/n) with him but he resisted. "(C/n), if you don't come with they'll kill you!"
Kill... I was shocked and could finally speak up after I understood what was wrong. They were Jews.
"Hide in our house. We have a secret room and enough food to give to you."
He hesistated a bit. "You have already done so much for my family, (y/n). I can't bring you in any danger."
"No one will find out. I'm sure my dad would also want you to hide in our house."
He nodded and we walked straight back to my house. When my dad opened the door he knew what was wrong immediately. He showed the way to the secret room which was beyond a closet. We gave them a candle to lit up the dark room and some bread.
After a week they still weren't found and they sometimes even left the room. They couldn't get to close to the windows and if someone knocked on the door they had to go back quickly.
"I don't know what I'd do if they found you, (c/n)." I said.
We were lying on my bed looking at the ceiling.
"I promise you that I won't leave you."
After around 8 months living in the same house we became pretty close and fell in love.
Every night he came to my room and stayed there till I fell asleep. He held me tight and stroked my hair. We talked about getting married and having a nice cottage near a lake after this war was over and when we were old enough.
On one night we were up till late. After we had a great night being together he fell asleep too and didn't go back to his room.
The next morning we woke up from banging on the door. Apparently the neighbours had turned us in. They told the Germans we hid Jews. They had known for a long time since we trusted them but the Germans gave rewards to those who turned in Jews.
People do horrible things when they are desperate...
Because no one opened they kicked in the door and yelled at us to show ourselves. (C/n) wasn't able to go back to the secret room anymore. That wasn't very usefull anyway since the Germans found it and chained (c/n)'s dad and brother.
Still in my room I started crying imagining the worst for them. (C/n) held my hand and kissed me and hugged me for one last time.
"I will come back to you, (y/n), I promise." He said with that sweet smile.
"I love you, (c/n)." I said and kissed him on his soft lips.
We were ripped apart by the German soldiers who stormed into my room. They grabbed (c/n) and hit his head. As he fell on the ground they stomped on him a few times too. His face was all bloodied as they slurred him with them.
I tried to pull him loose but was shot by a rifle in my leg. I fell on the ground and tried to get up but I couldn't.
With all my might I tried again and was able to stand up. I ran after the soldiers as quick as I could. My leg hurt so much but I didn't care.
I saw the soldiers pushing (c/n) into the train wagon. As I ran to the wagon I saw people looking at my leg and then at me. I was leaving a trail of blood behind me. A few German soldiers laughed at me. The ones that took (c/n) were already gone.
When I got to the wagon where (c/n) was I saw him looking through the small barred window. In the wagon I saw more people. They were all stuffed together in a small space.
(C/n) stook his hand through the bars and I took it and started crying again.
"Don't cry, (y/n). I'm gonna be alright. I'll come back to you, okay? I promised." He smiled and the train started moving.
"No, please." I turned around to the German soldiers. "Please, stop this train. Please help somebody..." I begged to the soldiers but they did nothing and just laughed.
The train gained speed and I wasn't able to run with it anymore. I tried to hold on to his hand but eventually lost grip. I tripped and fell on the ground.
I saw (c/n) sticking his head outside the window and mouthing one last thing before he got out of sight.
It's okay, (y/n). I love you.
Tears streamed down my face as I lay on the ground watching the train becoming smaller and smaller and eventually disappearing into the horizon.
A kind old lady helped me up and wiped away my tears.
"He'll be fine, dear." She gave me a smile and patted me on my back.
Three days later the war had ended and the whole city was celebrating. The Jews were saved from the camps but not everyone came back...
(C/n) had been on the last ever train to the concentration camps.
