Underwater

The water was great. Not too hot and not too cold. It was just perfect for a midnight swim. As I swam underwater I saw only a few fishes. The Moon gave just enough light to see the reef.

I swam back to the surface and looked up at the sky. There were no clouds so I saw the full moon and the thousend stars. I soon found the constellation Little Bear.

Yep, I really loved those nights in the water.

After my midnight swim I snuk back into my room. If my parents found out they would go mad. 'No swimming after ten o'clock' they had said.

You know why? Because we're cast outs. Three years ago our pod accused us for betrayal. Apparently you can't have human friends. They banished us to live with them on land and if they saw us they'd give us legs for eternity.

After ten o'clock they always swim close to where we live so that's why we can't swim then.

The next morning I had to get up early for school. I overslept a bit so I had to hurry.

"(y/n)? (c/n) is already here." mom said.

"Yeah I'm coming." I replied.

(c/n) is the reason we were banished. We've been friends for five years but we could've only kept it a secret for two years. In those five years I've actually started to like him. A lot.

I picked up my bag and hurried out of my house.

"Hi, moonfish." (c/n) said.

He knows what I am and he calls me moonfish because I like swimming during midnight.

"Hello, sorry you had to wait, I overslept."

"Doesn't matter, let's just run."

And so we ran to school.

(c/n) and I met in front of the school. We walked next to the beach on our way home. It was a bit longer but that didn't really matter. The weather was nice so (c/n) asked me to walk over the beach.

"Hey (y/n), look over there! In the water." he pointed at something but.I couldn't see what it was so I went closer to the water.

"Oh my god, (c/n)!" I yelled at him laughing and a few seconds later I lay on the ground not able to stand up. He kept laughing at me as he helped me into deeper water.

"Got you, hahaha!"

"Yeah, you sure did." I sighed and splashed him back.

"I'm just gonna go home and take the boat so we can you to your favorite spot. Well if you want to."

"Sure, I'll wait here trying to be dry before you come back or before anyone SEES me."

"Don't worry, nobody ever comes to this part of the beach." he said as he walked away.

I watched him till he got out of my sight. He is such a child sometimes. I shook my head with a grin. (c/n) is smart, funny, a gentleman and kind. He is also sooo good looking. Just the perfect one. When I see him it makes me happy, even if I had the worst day ever. He's always been there for me. I wouldn't know what to do without him. But, does he love me too...?

A few minutes later I saw (c/n) in his white boat. He got closer to the shore and I jumped on his boat avoiding getting wet since I just dried up.

"Alright, let's go." he said and started the boat.

The trip to the place was very nice. It took about twenty minutes to get there and we talked the whole way. When we arrived I dove into the water and gestured to him to come after me.

The water was very shallow but the reef was still as beautiful as anywhere else. The fishes were colourful and they swam pretty close.

We swam next to eachother admiring the reef. But the reef wasn't the only thing I was looking at. (c/n) made eye contact with me a little longer than normal and smiled. I blushed.

The fish were surrounding us and they drove us closer and closer. I felt his back against mine and we turned to face eachother. He grabbed my hand and gestured for me to go to the surface.

Still holding my hand he looked me in the eyes and said.

"You know. I-I uhm... I wanted to tell you something for a long time but I just didn't dare to." he scratched his head. "Well, here it goes."

he's being so awkward it's cute.

"Okay, pff hehe. I love your laugh with that funny snort. I love the way your eyes sparkle under the stars. I love it how you always make me happy. I love that you're so kind to anyone. I love that you're always there for me. And I love... You."

"I..." The butterflies in my belly went crazy. "I lo-"

But before I could finish my sentence (c/n) disappeared underwater and a red colour was everything I saw.

I dove underwater and saw (c/n) trying to get away from a shark. I swam to him and drove the shark away by hitting it hard with my tail. I held (c/n) in my arms and swam to the shore as fast as I could. A red colour made a trail whereever we went.

On the beach (c/n) had his eyes closed. I cried for help, louder than I had ever shouted. I didn't care about that somebody would see my tail. But it didn't matter since nobody came.

"It's okay, (y/n)." he had a hard time talking. "I will get better, (y/-."

"Please don't leave me. I love you." his heart stopped.

I held his hand and prayed and cried. I tried everything to get him back but it was no use. He was gone, gone forever.

"(c/n)... I love you too."
