:8: The Start of a New Life
When I slowly awake the cold air flushes over me like a thousand ice cubes and I shiver in the process. When did I fall asleep last night and what the heck happened?I wonder, as I sit up slightly and look over to find the others in the fort, but they are nowhere in sight. My side thoughts are immmediately pushed away then, as the thoughts about finding the others are more important.
I quickly pick myself off the flooring and feel the tense aches already in my back. I moan out in pain, but physically try to hide it as I climb down the ladder; going to look for Belle, Camic, and Jess. The autumn leaves fall lightly from the trees around me, as the wind picks up its pace.
“Camic?” I ask, looking around, not seeing any of them at all. It’s then I start to panic and dart off into the woods to search for them. I don’t go too far, in case someone see's me, but I do go a far distance away from the safe oasis of our fort. Birds chirp high in the pine trees of the great greenery all around and squirrels scurry up trees in the process to protect themselves.
I stop in my tracks when I hear the low scuffle of something behind me and turn slowly around. I was prepared to battle some kind of vicious dog, but instead all that showed was a little vole, digging its way under the fallen leaves. I sigh out and step over the creature; looking back once more to the fort in the distance, as I see Belle come into my vision and immediately I start running that direction.
"Belle!” I yell, finally reaching the fort, but to see only a small pile of blankets there. Why are these here? I wonder, pounding my fist on the ladder and leaning up against it. They could have at least told me where they were going! I think once more, but jumping to a new thought once I see Jess coming into the woods. I am going to kill them for ditching me!
“Jess, you idiot!” I scream, running at him nearly toppling him over in the process. “Where are the others? Why did you all just leave me?” I ask, pacing back and forth again.
“We went out to get supplies and we didn’t want to wake you.” Jess tells me, placing more blankets down on the ground. I try to understand what he is telling me, but I have no clue.
“Supplies for what? You didn’t get caught?” I ask, as I see Belle and Camic coming back as well with bags full of what seems to be food.
“Supplies for when we run. We’re leaving around dusk tonight; Camic decided that it would be best for us to do so considering your father won’t stop till he has you.” he tells me, leaning up against the ladder. “And no we don’t get caught; the warehouse is right where the forest begins. It’s easy to sneak in and get supplies that the Guards keep there.”
“Guards?” I ask, confused as to the word he used.
“We call them that, since the word terrorist doesn’t seem to stick.” Jess replies, walking off.
“Wait no,” I call after him. “I still am confused though on this whole thing.”
“What are you confused with? We’re running away, Carnate.” Jess says once more, sending me to really understand what he means. Running away.
“No one ever accomplishes running away without being killed or brought back for torturing; that’s why no one tries anymore. And there’s a huge fence enclosed around each state that’s almost impossible to get over or under with all the terrorists…I mean Guards, guarding the outskirts! We’ll never make it!” I say strongly, pacing once again. “I don’t want you all endangering yourselves like that.” I yell louder, making Belle and Camic now stare at me as they walk towards us with supplies.
