:11: Crossing the Border

The day went by fast and yet again the sun sets, leaving the darkness of the forest to dawn upon us. I now lie in tall swaying grass, in which we’ve moved into from the safe brush of our hide out before. My mind races about everything that happened today and I want it all to stop. First it’s Karianna and her ways with Camic, then its Cameron and Adrian, the two which I actually fear now.

I groan out in pure torture and prop myself up with my elbows; looking up into the night sky. The stars gleam heavily and I smile for I haven’t seen those in a while. “Why can’t I be like you? Why can’t I just forget the past and move on?” I speak to the sky, hoping someone will respond back. Someone that now I terribly miss and a part of me wishes I really was like her up there, happy and free.

A tear drops down my cheek, landing on the same dress in which I had worn on my birthday. The memories try to flood over me, but this time I win by closing my eyes tightly and letting the tears flow silently out.

“Carnate?” I hear Camic in the distance and I snap my eyes open within the instant. He can’t see me like this. I think, as I wipe the tears from my eyes quickly before he comes into my view and sits beside my sadden face. “Why are you out here?” he asks, moving a hand up to my hair and brushing through it.

“Just wanted to see the stars.” I slur, since my voice still crackles from the crying before. He sighs and looks up with me as well. The stars seem to shine brighter than before with Camic by my side and I slightly smile for that. “Aren’t they the most beautiful things?” I ask, looking back to Camic. He doesn’t notice though and still looks to the stars above.

“Not really.” he replies, looking down to me.

“What’s more beautiful than stars?” I ask, since I can’t think of anything.

"You.” he replies grinning. I sigh and look back up to the sky, trying not to notice what he had said. I don’t like when people compliment me, because usually they never really mean it. I’m not even close to being more beautiful than those gleaming stars up there.

“Camic…please don’t,” I say, nervous for his reaction.

“Carnate it’s true. I’ve never seen anything more beautiful than you.” he adds, pulling me onto my side so I face him. I sigh and then look up at those green eyes. He has so much confidence in his thoughts, it’s not right.

“I didn’t want you to reply to that.” I admit, turning myself irritated in the minute. He smiles, but quickly loses it when I glare at him.

“I love you.” Is all he says, leaving a weird ambience after. I stare at him in muse, not wanting to answer.

“We should be going.” I say, keeping my head low and walking back to the others. Belle, Jess and Cameron hit it off as they talk about their states and how much they’re alike, while Karianna and Adrian each take turns at hitting a tree with the knife Camic lent to them.

“Can we just get moving already?” Adrian whines, leaning up against the tree. I walk past him, ignoring the question and stuff the extra supplies into bags; slinging them over my shoulder once I finish.

“If everyone’s ready, then I think it’s a go.” Camic says, making everyone’s heads turn toward him.

We all get on our stomachs, as Camic orders and crawl through the long grass, but as soon as we got to our distraction point we finally got up and all hid behind the tall fat trees Belle had told me about earlier. The setting sun was getting darker and darker as the time went on, making me much less worried than I was before when I thought the sky wouldn’t darken up in time.

“We have to do it now. We can’t wait.” Camic says softly to everyone else, as well all listen patiently.

“Hey!” Cameron yells, making even my ears blare. “You’re not very good at securing the states are you now?”  I listen closely, as I hear mumbles of the Guards getting down from their posts and going to search for the noise.

“Show yourself,” I hear a Guard yell in a deep husky voice. We all keep quiet and wait it out. “Or we shoot!” I hear the same man yell again. We. That means that there is more than one, which is good since we want as many Guards as possible out of their stands.

I peek around the corner of the large tree and notice four men searching through the tall grass; away from us because of how Cameron made his voice travel so it wouldn’t seem like we were over here.

“Quietly.” I hear Camic whisper grabbing my hand and pulling me around the tree. We get on our stomachs again and crawl like before through the rest of the tall grass; which leads up to the fence. Right there and then my anxiety reaches full limit and my heart throbs in deep thick beats. It feels as if I’m going to throw up, but I know better and would do anything to keep it inside me.

“We’re going to make a hole in the bottom of the fence.” Camic whispers, digging through his pockets and pulling out the huge blade he had stole from the warehouse; which is covered by a thick black casing. I gasp at amazement, since I’ve never seen a knife that large considering all weapons are banned in our town, and help Camic take the case off. The beautiful silver knife was revealed then, sparkling from the little sunlight dimming around us. Immediately Camic started cutting a hole in the silver fencing, very slowly.

“Done yet?” I ask, as Camic takes off another piece of the fencing. I purse my lips and try real hard to think about something else. Anything other than what might happen if we’re caught… slaughter, murder, torture. Any of those could and will happen if we’re not careful enough.

“We’ve got barely anytime on our hands. The Guards are coming our way!” I hear Adrian loudly whisper, crawling up beside me. It’s then Belle, Jess, Karianna and Cameron make their way to us as well and form a little pack behind me, Camic and Adrian.

“I’ve got it! Go through.” Camic says to me as he hands the knife and case to Adrian, who protectively grasps it in his hand. I follow on through first as Camic guides me, so I don’t cut myself from the sharp points. I struggle out of the tight spot, noticing the cuts on my arms and sides now bleeding and I fall onto the soft green grass on the other side. I give a smile for, I did it! I made it out of state limits, away from my father and everything that wasn’t important to me.

I hike myself roughly up from the grass and kneel as I go to help Belle, who now struggles as I did to get through the hole. I pull on her waist and bring her out, telling her to run to the nearest tree. She does as told and soon enough everyone else follows to the same location, the only one in which still needs to get through is Camic.

I grab his hands and pull him through, digging my feet into the grass behind me and pulling it out along the way. Finally, after what seemed like a good workout; he slides through, cuts scratching his pants and face.

“Thanks.” he out of breathily says, as we both stand up from the ground. I turn to look for the tree, in which Belle and all the rest hide behind, but I can’t find them anywhere and I don’t want to make a scene trying to find them.

“Where did they go?” I ask Camic, who now comes to my side and grabs hold of my hand. He just shrugs, looking back sharply and freezing in place. I look back as well and notice a Guard looking directly at us, his mouth hanging open and his gun shakily pointed at our heads. I swallow down hard, trying to regain the coward to breathe and take a step back toward the trees.

“You move, I shoot.” the Guard speaks softly, but clear enough for us to hear. I stutter out breaths, turning it into hyperventilating and clutching Camic’s hand to the full content. I didn’t think in a million years that this set up would happen. I didn’t think it would turn out that once we got outside the limits, the Guard catches us. “I found them!” the man yells to the others behind him, which still search.

“What do we do?” I whisper to Camic beside me urgently, not wanting to die after getting so far.
