:17: Blood Red Snow

I think my breath caught in my throat, because I don’t say or do anything more than stare.

“Your names please?” asks one of the Guards; an Irish accent lingering on his words. I look over to Belle then, as she gives me a shake of her head before answering.

“I’m Anna. And this here is Carol,” Belle says pointing toward me. “and this is…Marcy.” she hesitantly says as she points to Karianna, before looking back to the Guards.

“Really now?” says one of the Guards, as they take out small square pictures and hold them up to our faces. “Unless my eyes deceive me, it looks as if your name is Belle Layton,” he says motioning to Belle beside me in shock. “and you’re Carnate Mallan,” he says looking to me. ”and last but definitely not least, Karianna Novery. You all have been marked as missing, as well as seen escaping the state limits; in which we have been scouting around trying to find you all.” the Guard finishes, as he motions for the others behind him to grab us so we don’t escape.

“We also have the knowledge that there are others that escaped with you. Where are they?” he asks, as we all stay completely quiet from not wanting to give away the boys. “Answer me now!” he yells, pointing his gun directly at Belle. “Or she gets it!” Immediately then my heart starts stammering in my chest from not wanting anything to happen to her. She has been my best friend ever since I was little and I would never want her dead in a million years.

“We have a cabin. They’re there,” I let out shamefully. I didn’t want to tell them where Camic and the others were, but I couldn’t let anyone hurt Belle like this.

“Lead the way then.” a different Guard yells, motioning us to follow orders. We all trudge through the fine layer of snow, not knowing exactly where we are going until finally I see the small little cabin in my sight. I smile at the thought of coming back, but then remembering who’s behind me…I cringe up.

“Up ahead.” I mumble under my coat, which I had pulled tighter around me from the cold still on my body. Guards race up, guns in hands and uniforms on, to the cabin and break in through the door. “Don’t hurt him.” I yell, trying to run after them, but only to be held back tighter by another Guard. Once I see Camic come out first being held back by a Guard much stronger than him, I break out into sobs. I can’t believe this is happening! It was so perfect and now it’s all a disaster! And it’s my entire fault for giving them away!

“Carnate?” Camic asks bewildered, while Cameron, Adrian, Jess, and him are brought up across from Karianna, Belle, and I.

“Well, well, well. Look who we have here; everyone in which we have been looking for for the past month or so. Camic Sear, Adrian Forse, and Cameron Forse. Along with you lovely girls.” the main Guard speaks with a smug smirk locked on his lips. “What a darling move you made to try to escape. Didn’t you ever think about how we’d find you though? I mean we don’t just give up!” he turns up yelling in the end and I cringe back almost hitting the Guard holding me.“Our whole job is to arrest citizens who have done wrong and protect others from them.”

“We didn’t kill anyone, we didn’t threaten anyone; we did nothing that you’d have to ‘protect others from’. You just don’t want others getting the idea of escaping, so you lock everyone who had tried escaping away and call it good.” Belle speaks out, making me utterly afraid for what’s to happen.

“I would shut your mouth if I were you.” the main officer says.

“If you were me, you would be too darn afraid to even speak up.” Belle says back, staring directly into the head Guard’s eyes. “You think everyone will obey everything you tell them. Well not me buddy, I am my own person and I will not be ruled by people like you.” Belle speaks clearly once more, before kicking away the Guard holding her and launching herself at the head Guard. Without another thought though, I hear a bullet launch out of a gun and hit Belle with a thud. I scream out in pure terror, as I fall to my knees covered in streams of my best friends’ blood.

“Belle!” I screech, trying to crawl over to her to try to help best I can, but I’m held back strongly by the Guard. “You killed my best friend!” I scream once more, as tears fall heavily from my eyes and onto the snow filled ground. I’m extremely sad about what happened just a second ago, but I am also enraged with fury and I want whoever did this to pay for their sin.

“She shouldn’t have spoken out like that.” the head Guard speaks again, walking up to Belle lying helplessly on the floor. Her hair, matted with blood, as her eyes are flung open and stare directly at me. “It was a shame that I had to do that, but what can I say. We have to protect the citizens from people like her.”

“What we have to protect the citizens from is people like you!” Adrian screeches, trying his hardest to break free and attack as Belle had before.

“Well, well, well it looks like we have another free spirit in the group.” the Guard holding me back says quickly.

“I’m only speaking the truth.” Adrian says, as he’s held back stronger by the Guard behind him.

“So are we.” the head Guard replies, taking a step away from us all and turning his back. “Deal with him privately.” he speaks to another Guard, but makes sure we all hear him loud and clear. “I’ll bring the others back.”

“No! I’m not leaving him!” Karianna screams, trying to escape the Guard’s arms by kicking viciously. I never knew she had that side of her in her, especially toward Adrian. I guess they always did have some sort of feelings toward each other after all though.

“Neither am I!” Cameron joins in, making Camic, Jess, and I all look like traitors since we say as still as can be. We know the consequences of speaking out and would rather wait it out and see what is to come then be killed on the spot here.  “We have been together for all my life and I wouldn’t dare leave without him or Karianna!”

It’s then I start to think about what he had said. He has deep feelings toward Karianna, and Adrian and would do anything for them. They are his family, even if they aren’t related. And we are technically their family too. We had all moved in together, laughed, cried, and stood by each other through thick and thin even if in the beginning it was hard to adjust. In the end though, we are all family and we will always be, so I don’t understand why we aren’t sticking up for them as well. Who cares about the punishments, at least we will be speaking our mind and standing with people we care about rather then watching them be slaughtered before our eyes.

Without another word from my self-conscious mind though, I hear the sharp sounds of gun shots going off; ringing through my ears and causing me to freeze in my breath, because I know what had just happened.

I slowly raise my head up to see the whole image played out in front of me. Blood. Blood hurtling screams being launched out of the victims, as the bullets paralyze their body with their sting. Karianna, Adrian and Cameron are all dead; all dead from that small bullet which flung into their head and stopped their hearts. Stopped their hearts plain in their chests, just like I thought mine had stopped.

It is my entire fault too, my fault that right now their bodies were piling up onto each other, blood drenching their hands and faces and everything else around. It’s my entire fault that Belle is dead as well, because I brought her into this. I had said that this life was going to be better than the one they lived before. I am the one who should be killed, not any of these innocent people…

I look back to the scene and notice the Guards kicking my family under a bank of snow, hiding them from what really happened. I clutch both my fists up into tight balls at my waist and right then I knew I was more angry then upset. Without another doubt crossing my mind, I launch myself out of the Guard that was holding me back and at the head Guard who now kicks Belle into the pile as well.

“You have no heart to treat them like this!” I scream at the top of my lungs, as I fall onto him kicking and screaming. “Better you dead than any of these innocent people!” I screech again, hurting my throat in the process. If I lost my life right now to a bullet, I wouldn’t care one bit! I think to myself. I know what I’m doing is right and I’m sticking to my gut! I’m not going to be pushed around and hurt like this while watching people die between my fingertips!

“You will never win!” I yell once more, before I feel a heavy force hit my chest; enclosing me in darkness.
