Prologue

Serena's POV

I opened the front door and nearly slipped on a piece of Oreo wrapper and gave out a little shriek that scared Mr. Tabby, our ginger cat, making him run out of the den.

I dumped my school bag on the couch and started searching for the TV remote.

I wanted to watch reruns of Friends to celebrate the beginning of a fantastic summer 'coz nothing can be better than watching this show, except maybe reading books.

We all had been waiting for the holidays to begin since last spring! Obviously all the high-schoolers wait for the summer break, but this time it was different.

This time we had to put up a play by the end of the summer for a charitable show that we had planned. All the proceeds would be given to an organisation that is helping the UN in removing poverty from third world countries like Somalia.

The show being charitable had excited us because it was letting us help the people in need, in our own way.

But our main reason for excitement was the script that we had picked.

Romeo & Juliet!

Shakespeare's all time classic and tragic love story.

I might not have been cast as Juliet, but the role of Juliet's mother Mrs. Capulet is also important! And it's Mrs. Capulet, not Lady Capulet because we were doing a modern adaptation of the Shakespearean classic!

Before I settled down lazily to watch the reruns, I needed some popcorn. But, I was confused whether to make butter popcorn or caramel popcorn. A very difficult choice.

Watching my favourite shows or reading books while munching on popcorns after school ended was a ritual that I had established to mark the beginning of holidays.

Caramel. I finally decided, as I pulled one packet out of the storage cupboard and shoved it into the microwave and set the timer.

As the popcorn popped in the microwave oven, my mind drifted away to the squeal of delight that Zara, my best friend, had given when she was chosen to star as Juliet. Moreover, Romeo happened to be the school hottie Jared Storm! He also happened to be the star soccer player, one of the best defenders that the school ever had!

Zara my lucky byotch, I sighed as I rocked on one of the barstools at the breakfast bar.

Harry Stephen, the school's very own player, was Count Paris/ Mr. Paris the business man to whom Juliet was betrothed.

This guy was a total hottie, but on the other hand he treated girls like pieces of dirt. I never understood that how these girls could let themselves be used just like that. They had no respect for themselves, and I had absolutely no respect for neither them nor Harry.

My friends and I weren't exactly the popular cheerleaders of the school, but we were popular enough to matter. We were the popular do-gooders of the school.

While the popcorns popped in the microwave oven, Josh Hamilton came to my mind. Josh was Oliver's best friend & another amazing soccer player. Josh and I were enacting Mrs. & Mr. Capulet, Juliet's parents i.e. Zara's onstage parents. Zara is my BFF but Oliver is certainly her BFF and same applies to him.

Everyone thinks they are a couple. But if you ask me, they do not look cute together. And that is 'coz they look sizzling hot together and look so much in love! Like those fairytale perfect type! But they would never admit that sadly. I doubt they themselves know how much they like each other in a more-than-just-friends-way.

And as for my Mr. Capulet, Josh, I have always found him charming and cute! And he can be totally adorable and sweet when he wants to be, so I was more than happy to be enacting his wife!

*Sigh*

Mrs. & Mr. Montague were our very own Oliver, Sara's bestie, and a newbie, Hannah Skeller. I suspect that she had tried really hard to be cast opposite Olly. She seems way too fond of him lately, plus she seems too shrewd for my liking.

Way too shrewd.

Mr. Gray (or Mr. Gay as we all call him), our drama teacher, was yet to do the casting for the rest of the characters. The auditions were to be over by next week and then we would start the rehearsals!

Oh, sh*t! My caramel popcorn must be toast by now, I realised, as I heard the microwave ping! I was so lost that I nearly forgot about the popcorn in the microwave oven!

My popcorn weren't totally toasted. Yet. I took the packet out with a pair of oven gloves.

Jeez, it was so hot to hold even with the gloves! I just cannot handle hot things.

Hot guys were a different case though.

'Friends is certainly the best programme ever!' I thought as I switched on the TV. Wonder why they never nominated it for the Oscars! Okay, that was a dumb thought, but whatever!

I snuggled down into the plush leather couch that Mom had bought. At first I was disgusted with its olive green colour. It reminded me of reptiles. But now, I was totally in love with it because it was so comfortable to curl up whenever one wanted to. Also, somehow over the past year, since Mom bought it, I had got used to seeing it in the den, which was all in Mahogany wood. The couch added a bit of a different colour with its odd olive green to the room.

I wished for Zara to join me as I looked at our picture from last year's spring dance. Her golden curls gleamed in the light and my own deep brown hair was twisted up in a French knot, a stark contrast to hers, shining in the same light. Both our eyes full of happiness as we laughed away at the camera. Olly had taken the picture & had said something about Kate, the school's head cheerleader and biggest snob, looking like a Kangaroo in her brown dress, right before he clicked the picture.

A smile tugged at my lips as I picked up the photo frame that held the picture. The frame was a gift from Josh on my last birthday. It was a purple frame with silver crystals stuck at random places. He especially had bought it so that I could frame this very picture in it.

That time I didn't know that a few months later I would be enacting his wife onstage and that I would be so happy about it. But now that I had become friends with him I was really happy about it, all thanks to Olly & Zara.

I put back the frame and turned on the channel. Watching reruns of Friends always made me feel so blessed to have such wonderful friends.

And getting to act out a classic with them made me feel super-duper blessed!
