My heart nearly stops. "No." I whisper. "How did I survive that long?" I ask quietly. Xander looks at me, biting his lip. "Well, scientist concluded a long time ago that this is no ordinary storm. It's an Impossible storm, from all the snow, winds, and how cold it is. It's thirty degrees below, but it effects you extremely slowly. That's why you didn't die, and only got frostbite." I nod, sighing. "What's with the gang?" I ask. "Well, while you were asleep the storm expanded, and luckily the snowfall lessened, but it's now covering almost the entire US, even northern Texas. People think this is the Apocalypse, so they've banned together in groups to try and survive. The only places that are safe are Arizona, California, southern Texas, New Mexico, Louisiana and Florida, so they've put limits on how many people can get in. You can only get in if you have eight people, so if a group doesn't have enough, then they resort to taking hostages, but they don't risk taking more than one per family." He says
"Do you know if they'll let us go when we get into the state?" I whisper. He nods. "Yeah, they actually apologized for taking me away, and they said they would let me go when they got into the Arizona border." My heart lifts. "So we're going to Arizona? That's where Adam was headed!" Xander grins. "Maybe they're already there!" I nod excitedly. "How long have I been out specifically?" He thinks for a second. "Um, about eighteen days? They would be there by now." I smile to myself. I would find them again! After several minutes, we stop at the edge of the road and two of the men pull shovels off they're backs and start digging out a hole in the ground. When they finish everyone slides down in it, and we are finally shielded from the wind.
"Alright, you can put down the gun now, no one can see us." Zach says. The guy holding the gun sets it down and groans. "Look, we're so sorry about all this, we just really need to get into a safe state. Our families are all in Arizona and we didn't have enough people to get in." He says. One of the guys untied me and Xander's hands. "By the way, I'm Zach, this is Caiden, George, Michael, Ben, and Jason. What's your name?" I smile halfheartedly. "I'm Jess." I say, looking at Jason. "I know someone named Jason." He smiles. "We promise we'll let you both go as soon as we're inside the Arizona border." I nod. "I didn't even know about the limit, I've been unconscious for over two weeks. Anyways, I think my family is in Arizona right now, they probably got there a week ago." They nod. "So, you want some food? We can start up a fire, we have some wood." Zach offers. Right then my stomach growl very loudly. "Well, I haven't had food for two weeks, so yes please!" I laugh.
They begin setting up the fire, and Ben hands me back my bag. I decide that Caiden was the one that had grabbed me before. I open it up and see a few blanket near the top and my dead phone. I take it out and place it aside, pulling out the blankets. "Hey, I have these if ya want to use them." I say. I have about four, so we all pair into groups to use them, me with Xander. "Hey, take these." I hear George say, and he tosses me a pair of black ski gloves. I smile. "Thanks." He waves a hand. "No problem." The food that they have is enough, some hotdogs, canned spinach, and some milk. Now I'm much more relaxed. I'm safe with people that have protection, food, and seem friendly enough. I might just make it to Ty's and see Joyce, Gwen and Adam again.
I look at Xander, and smile. "You want to come with me to Tucson? You can stay with us until you can find your family again." He smiles. "Sure, why not, an it would be safer for us to travel together." I nod and sigh. "I wonder if it will ever be the same again, if we will go to school, socialize, anything normal ever again." I say. He exhales deeply. "Maybe one day, hopefully everything will go back to the way it's suppose to. If the storm goes away then the snow will melt in the summer." I shrug. "But then there will be huge floods nationally." He sighs. "There's always going to be difficulties, and we have to learn to overcome them. I nod. "I know we'll overcome them, I just know it."
