I walk silently down the street, Joyce next to me. It's the first day back from winter break, and now we're walking to school in the strangely cold weather. The weathermen have been freaking out over, but I don't get what the big deal is. It's just a bit of winter cold, right? I'm nervous to see what happens with Joyce at school. Some people might be confused, others shocked, and a few might just accept it. When we reach the lawn, I notice a few people lingering, none I can recognize. They stare at us, wide eyed. I shy away from their glare and continue walking. Joyce walks confidently beside me. She doesn't care what they think of her, probably because she has no idea what this school is like. We make out way inside and I lead her to the front office. Mrs. Pierce looks up as we walk in. "Ah, you must be Joyce." She grabs a schedule from a pin board behind her. "Here you go. You have all your classes with Jessica, so she can show you around."
She smiles. "Thank you." We turn to leave right as a boy I've never seen before walks in. He has brown hair that falls down almost over his green eyes. I grin when I see his t-shirt. It's a red "I'm a Squid" shirt! I glance at Joyce and she grins back at me. "Hello Xander, here's your schedule." I hear Mrs. Pierce say. We walk out of the room slowly, grinning at each other. "He's a recruit!" I cry. She nods. "I don't think he noticed us." I grin. "We can say hi at lunch. He's cute!" She laughs. "I know it's a bad idea to argue with you about who gets the last Mac 'N cheese, I'm not going to bother with boys." I laugh. "You're a smart one!" She glances down at her sheet. "Okay I'm locker 395." I smile. "Good, I'm 397." She smiles. "Okay, so we have chorus first?" I nod. "Yeah."
"What's it like?" She asks as she puts her locker combo in. I shrug. "Okay, I guess. I luckily get to sit next to the only person in the grade that's actually nice to me." She sighs as she pulls out the binder from her bag. Adam had gotten a list emailed to him and taken her out shopping for the supplies. "We just started some new music before break, so don't worry about that." I add as I slam my locker shut.
-Time Skip to Lunch-
I run down the stairs with my lunchbox in hand, skipping steps as I go. Joyce follows a bit slower behind me, taking the time to hit each step. "Hurry up!" I call impatiently, turning my head to glare at her. "Oh be quiet, he's not going to disappear before you see him!" She says annoyed. Finally we reach the bottom of the stairs and I run down the hallway to the cafeteria door, slowing down as I reach it. As soon as I walk in I see tables and tables filled with kids, just like everyday. I search the crowd for Xander's face. Joyce walks up to me and starts looking with me. Then I spot him at the corner of the huge room, at an empty table surrounded by full ones. I notice some kids laughing at him and they throw a balled-up paper napkin at his face.
I run over quickly and glare at the guys that were teasing him. "Hey, leave him alone!" I say, frustrated. The boy scoffs. "None of your business, blondie!" He says, balling up another napkin and throwing it at me. My had flies up on instinct and grabs the ball mid-flight, and I crush it in my hand. "Leave. Him. Alone." I growl. The boy's eyes widen and he spins around, back to his table-mates. I turn around with a grin on my face and drop the napkin on the table. I drop my lunch down and sit down, looking at Xander, who's looking at me dumbstruck. "Hi, I'm Jess, this is Joyce. Your Xander, right?" I say casually. He nods. "Are you... Are you the Jess and Joyce, as in the ones SkyDoesMinecraft adopted?" he asks. Joyce grins and nods. "That's us! JoyceIsTotallyCool and BadassMincraftGirl!" [names good or not?]
He laughs. "Wow, I never thought I would meet you guys!" I shrug him off. "Naw, we ain't a big deal." Joyce looks at me. "And you ain't one for proper grammar!" She says. I pout and shove her playfully. Xander grins at us. "So, why are you sitting with me?" he asks. I shrug. "You're new, people were picking on you, and I noticed you liked Adam, so I though we could come over and sit with ya." he smiles and nods. "Well, thanks, those guys are jerks." I nod. "Yeah, I've had to deal with them for two years." He looks at me sympathetically.
"Sorry that you had to deal with them." He says awkwardly. "No big deal." I reply casually, unzipping my lunch and pulling out the pb&j sandwich I made. "So, you guys are identical twins? Well, except for the eyes." He says. I notice Joyce fidget in her chair as she nods. "Yeah, except the eyes." She murmurs. I glance at her quickly with a questioning look. Why is she acting so weird?
---Time Skip to Walking Home---
I sigh as I glance at Joyce. She went through her whole day without a real problem, except people looking at her. I still haven't asked her about that one thing at lunch at the mention of our different eyes. Now I guess would be the best time to ask. "Hey Joyce, why were you acting all awkward when Xander asked about our eyes?" Her shoulders tense and a scared look crosses her face. "Um, it was nothing." She stutters. I roll my eyes. "Joyce." I say annoyed. She gulps nervously. "Fine. You know how I have contacts, right?" She says slowly. I nod. "Yeah, and what about that?" She sighs deeply. "Well, one of them is... it's... colored." She finally says.
I stop and look at her. "So what, do you have...?" I ask excitedly. She sighs again and nods. "Heterochromia, yeah." I squeal and jump up and down. "YES I KNEW WE WERE EXACTLY ALIKE!" I fangirl. She smiles softly, laughing. "Well, we are genetically identical." I hug her, and we continue to walk. "Why were you so scared to tell me? I have it to ya know!" I say exasperated. She shrugs. "I dunno, I guess it kinda just slipped my mind." I stare at her intensely. "How can these," I say, waving my hands in front of my eyes, "Slip your mind?" She laughs. "I have no idea."
