After that stupid plank exercise, we were sent to have breakfast. I was starving but I couldn't feel hungry. The adrenaline was still running through my veins so fast I was dizzy. I stood in line and grabbed some bread, some cereals and an orange juice. Then the infamous moment arrived. I didn't know anybody. The worst part about high school came back... Where to sit? I looked around and decided to play low. I sat on the last seat of the last table, near the window. I sat alone, obviously, but it didn't bother me. My mind was too loud for me to be able to hear anyone else talking trash. I ate fast and then came right outside. I ran to my bedroom and got myself a cigarette. Then I just sat on the floor, looking at the grey sky.
I still had about fifteen minutes left and my mind was racing like a bitch! I was so damn anxious! I was terrified! First few hours there were mentally exhausting and I was pretty sure I was far from seeing its full potential. How the hell was I supposed to stand it for the next 3 months?! I had no idea! I was literally shitting my own pants! As I finished the smoke, I checked the clock, still had 10 minutes left... I sent it all to hell and lighted up my second smoke. I then ran my hands on my face. I had signed up for it. No way in hell I was gonna quit! I had to endure it or it would be the biggest shame in my whole damn life! And besides I had something to show to someone... I took a deep breath and buried my face in my knees for a few seconds, exhaling slowly. When I raised my head again, Sargent James was standing in front of me. I didn't even feel him coming! You don't even imagine how much my heart raced right there. I looked at the clock right away.
-You're not late, Jones.-He told me. I jumped back on my feet, not knowing exactly what to do. He just kept staring me in the eyes, coldly, like he was swimming through all my weak points.
-Sir...-I whispered, trying to break the tension. He let his head fall to the side and his eyebrows went down.
-Is there anything you want to tell me, Jones?-He asked like he knew about something I didn't.
-Uhh... No... I just...-I looked down.-I just didn't know if we could smoke in here so I was trying to see if I was in trouble to be honest...
-You can smoke. Your dad isn't a part of our troops so... I don't give a fuck. Just know if I find any leftovers, I'm gonna make you clean them with your mouth.
-Yes, sir.-I answered and relaxed a bit. He raised one eyebrow.
-I'm gonna break you, Jones...-A twisted smile lighted up his face as his eyes gained a sick shine.-And I'm gonna love it!
What I felt in that moment was something I've never felt ever again in my whole damn life! That shiver down my spine at first, the hair in the back of my neck standing, that knot in my throat, then the sudden stomach spin, my legs shaking and then... The moment the whole game changed. I let the cigarette slip from my fingers as my lips curved into an equally sick smile. I was afraid. Man, I was shitting my undies! But the adrenaline was back into my system like those words the Sergeant had said were the trigger to the bomb inside my soul. My mind was blown, my entire body was shaking. The excitement was such, the fear was barely hearable.
-That's what I'm here for, Sarg.-I told him, feeling unstoppable. His smile disappeared as his face went back to the same emotionless expression.
-Sure, Jones. Don't forget the leftovers.-He turned his back on me and walked away. It did break my mood a little bit, but I picked it and put it in the garbage. I then checked the clock. I was late. I ran back to the kitchen but nobody was there. Oh boy!
I was late and supposed to be somewhere but the base was so big I had no idea about their whereabouts. I didn't have the guts to ask anyone so I just ran around looking for them. After about 15 minutes, I found them. The drill Sergeant wasn't hard to find. The man was really fucking tall! I spotted him as soon as I turned the corner. It took me about 2 minutes to get to them. All my partners were down in the mud, doing push-ups. They all looked exhausted.
-Oh!! Miss Jones!-Sergeant said as I got near him.-You finally decided to bless us with your presence! You guys can stop now.-All of them let their bodies fall on the mud, absolutely drained. He put his arm around my shoulders.-Tell me, Jones. Traffic?-He asked sarcastically. I didn't even know what to say.
-No, sir. I just... I got lost...-I said, afraid he'd kick my butt!
-Oh, you got lost?-He laughed.-Alright then. No problem. Do you wanna go get some water? You look tired.
-Yes... That would be great, actually.-I answered, trying to understand why he was being so nice to me.
-Then go, sweetpie. Go!-He told me, all smiles and sweet eyes. I raised my eyebrow but did as he said. As soon as I turned my back, I understood his game.-YOU FILTHY BAGS OF SHIT! KEEP THE PUSH UPS COMING UNTIL SHE COMES BACK!-He screamed. I looked back.
-Go, honey.-He smiled to me. My partners were looking at me like I was meat and they were starving.
-I think I don't need it that much...
-Go, Jones. It's an order.-The sick smile showed up in his lips again. I sighted and went.
I was fucked. I was absolutely fucked! He was playing a dirty game... He would indeed destroy me. He was turning all my partners against me! And if there was a way to kick me out was by making me the black sheep of the herd. I could not allow it! But I couldn't disrespect his orders either. It was time to make my brain go to the gym. If he wanted to play the game, I was gonna play the game too. And if he wanted it dirty, I was gonna show him what dirty really is.
I was not gonna allow him to kick me out that easily.
