(Sapphire's POV)
Emerald, Green, Gold, Silver, Blue, and I raced through a cavern hidden deep underwater, defeating every Team Aqua Grunt along the way. I may be happy-go-lucky and oblivious to feelings like anger and hostility, but I still have a burning sense of justice. I understand what's right and wrong with certain things, and I will always stand for what I know us right. Everyone always sees me as a cheerful, innocent little girl, but nobody knows just how serious I can get when put in certain situations. Not even Emerald, my best friend since childhood, has seen me in a combative state. One thing is for sure, she's about to find out just how serious I can really be.
While everyone else took out the last of the Aqua Grunts with just one move each time, I continued ahead, my partner blasting back a large boulder that stood in our way, startling the all too familiar man who stood on the other side of it.
"H-hey, you're-!" Archie started in shock as he turned to face me, clutching the Red Orb in his hands.
"Sapphire Birch of Littleroot Town, chosen to be one of the Heroes of Hoenn to defend this region from the likes of you. That's who I am." I stated firmly, glaring at Archie with unwavering determination building inside of me. Swampert, now evolved from Marshtomp at long last, stood protectively in front of me, glaring at Archie as if daring him to make a move. Archie snickered, a smirk making its way to his face.
"Yeah, right, like you could do anything to defeat me. You're already too late as it is! As soon as I say the word and raise this Red Orb, Kyogre will awaken and do my bidding." Archie stated victoriously. For a split second, Ruby flashed through my mind. His defiant attitude and unwavering commitment to defending others even if he isn't in the mood to began to inspire me.
"Archie, you don't understand. If you use the Red Orb to awaken Kyogre, you will have no control over it." I stated firmly, taking a step forward as I spoke.
"What do you know?! You're just some kid who forgot your place!" Archie spat.
"It's you who forgot your place! What gives you the right to toy with the balance of nature?!" I snapped back, shocking even myself with my words. Archie began to laugh maniacally, causing fear and hesitation to build in my chest.
"It's quite simple, really. With Kyogre, I will wipe the world clean of humanity and expand the sea for the Water Pokémon!!" Archie exclaimed. I gasped, taking a shaky step backwards as his words sunk in.
"Y-you're insane! If you do that- no one is going to survive that!! Not even the Water Pokémon!" I yelled back, my eyes widening in shock as I began to quiver at the thought.
"We'll just see about that. Now, enough chitchat, it's time that I finally awaken Kyogre!!" Archie announced in a creepy tone.
"No!! We won't let you!! Swampert, Hydro Pump!!" I ordered swiftly.
"Crobat!" Archie called out as he quickly released his Pokémon. Before Swampert had time to attack, Crobat zipped past it, stopping right before me and threatening to slit my neck with the surprisingly sharp ends of its wings. Swampert froze and stared at me worriedly, unsure what to do in our current situation. "Now then, Sapphire, why don't you come here and witness me awakening the Legendary Kyogre?" Archie asked mockingly. Crobat forced me to walk to Archie's side, looking down into the small yet deep body of water before us, where the massive Legendary Pokémon rested before my eyes.
"If you go through with this.... you'll regret it." I grunted, raising my head away from Crobat's wings nervously.
"Shut up and watch, brat. Now... ancient Legendary Pokémon Kyogre, the Sea Basin Pokémon, here my voice!! Awaken and flood the world with your unbeatable power!!" Archie cried out, holding the Red Orb high above his head as he spoke. The Red Orb emitted a flash of red light that filled the whole room, and all fell silent. Suddenly, everything around us began to rumble. Kyogre's pale grey color faded away, and its typical blue and red color returned swiftly. It's golden eyes flashed open, Kyogre letting out a loud, deafening cry.
It was awake.
Crobat released its hold around my neck, causing me to fall to my knees in pure shock. Archie stared at Kyogre with wide, scary looking eyes, a menacing smile creeping its way onto his face in the process.
"Y-you can't do this.... the terror you will bring to the world... will be nothing short of insanity!" I growled, my hands balling into fists as I stared at the earth beneath me. It crossed my mind that I was beginning to sound a lot like Ruby now. I heard all of my friends running behind me, each of them chorusing a gasp as they stopped in their tracks.
"N-no!!" Silver stuttered out.
"We-we're too late!!" Blue gasped.
"Kyogre... has already been awoken." Green growled
"No, Sapphire...." Emerald muttered worriedly. I gritted my teeth, balling my fists even harder as I shut my eyes tightly, hoping to somehow fade away from the horrific scene before me.
I'm sorry Ruby, everyone.... I.... I failed.
(Ruby's POV)
After gathering ourselves back up, we raced through Team Magma's base, defeating every Grunt along the way. I couldn't help but notice what an amazing duo Fire and Red were, but I left the thought in the back of my head, needing to focus on the situation at hand. Fire, Red, Leaf, Crystal, and Yellow all covered for me when a large number of Grunts showed up, letting me duck through them unnoticed and find Maxie in the deepest point of the volcano. I stomped my foot firmly on the ground, startling the unsuspecting leader of Team Magma.
"This madness has gone far enough, Maxie. Leave Groudon alone!" I ordered firmly. Maxie groaned, clutching the Blue Orb firmly in his grasp.
"You again? Why do you insist on meddling with my plans?!" Maxie snapped, turning to face me with an outraged look on his face. In that moment, Sapphire flashed through my mind for a second. Her kindness and inability to lose control suddenly relaxing me.
"Because, Maxie... you don't understand what will happen if you awaken Groudon with the Blue Orb. The Blue Orb has no control over Groudon, so neither will you." I stated calmly, softening my gaze a bit as Blaziken took a stand beside me.
"How would you know that?! You're nothing but an ignorant child!" Maxie spat.
"I'm sorry, if I remember correctly, you're the one who's trying to mess with the balance of nature. Wouldn't that make you ignorant to the people and Pokémon you're planning to harm?" I asked with the same, unwaveringly calm tone. Maxie stifled a laugh.
"Harm them? You're sadly mistaken. The goal of Team Magma is to expand the land to help the people and Pokémon of Hoenn." Maxie stated innocently.
"No, Maxie. That may be your intention, but it doesn't match the future you are about to seal for us all. Groudon will end up ridding the world of all water, replacing it with pure land. Without water, nothing will survive." I explained, taking a gentle step forward as I spoke.
"Liar!! I'll show you just how the great Maxie will change the world when I awaken Groudon!!" Maxie yelled, beginning to raise the Blue Orb above his head.
"No!! Blaziken, stop him!!" I ordered swiftly.
"Mightyena!!" Maxie called out. Just before Blaziken could make his move, Maxie's Mightyena raced past it and tackled me to the ground, baring its teeth and snarling at me threateningly. I panted heavily, struck by fear after feeling the rush of wind around me and the impact of my back hitting the hot stone ground. Maxie took slow strides towards me, suddenly bending over and grabbing me by my shirt roughly.i grunted as he pulled me forcefully towards the small body of boiling magma, showing me where the great Legendary Groudon rested.
"M-Maxie... don't do it....!" I groaned, struggling to pry free of his tight grip. Blaziken didn't dare move in fear of Mightyena attacking me or Maxie pushing me into the magma.
"Silence!! Now, watch as I, Maxie, the leader of Team Magma, awakens this ancient legend! Groudon, the Continent Pokémon, here my command!! Awaken and expand the great land across Hoenn!!" Maxie cried out, raising the Blue Orb high above his head.
"No, don't!!" I gasped out as a blue light began to fill the room. The whole cave began to rumble as Groudon's grey color faded and was replaced with a crimson red. Groudon's golden eyes flashed open and it let out an ear splitting roar.
Groudon.... has awoken.
Maxie released his grip on my shirt, causing me to fall to my knees. I stared at Groudon in pure disbelief, looking for any possible way to wake myself up from this all too real nightmare.
"Why..... why would you do this...?" I muttered, tears threatening to fall from my eyes. I shut my eyes tightly and shook my head to keep the tears from pouring down my face, wishing that I could somehow reverse this terrible event. I heard my friends sprinting to catch up, gasping in shock when they spotted the awakened Groudon and me at the feet of Maxie.
"Ruby!!" Fire cried out, racing to my side and falling to her knees to wrap her arms around me.
"Fire, be careful!" Red warned, coming to his sister's side and sending a glare full of distrust at Maxie.
"Maxie..." I heard Leaf growl from somewhere behind me. Blue and Crystal fell silent in utter shock, probably fearful of the massive Legendary Pokémon.
"Ruby, are you okay?" Fire asked me worriedly. I shook my head in response, raising my head to stare at Groudon in utter fear, the thought of the loss of all my friends filling my mind.
I'm sorry Sapphire, everybody... I couldn't stop Maxie.... I... I failed you.
