Jack stayed and stared at them for hours, nobody else came in since it was a quiet shop. This was one of the rare pet stores who didn't put the pets to sleep if too many of them came in, like the ones you often see.
It has a lot of room, so it doesn't mind adding dogs or cats into the store as well, they're all treated nicely too.
The only reason I'm so sure about that is because I worked here, college made it too busy to work here so I quit the job, but...Maybe Amy was right.
Would Jack like to work? Probably, he wouldn't leave the dogs alone here though. But taking a look at his face and seeing how happy he is, well, how can I not ask for at least an application?
Nudging Amy and whispering for her to get the adoption papers and application to slip in, she walked off.
Making my way over to Jack, he looked up at me and had the brightest smile I have ever seen on him.
"They're all so cute! I don't know how anyone could ever not take any of them home."
"You have a point there, which is why we're bringing one home." Jack's happy face melted into a blank expression, his lips curled downwards but not necessarily into a frown.
It's as if his brain and heart stopped functioning at the same time.
"....What."
"Which one's your favourite?"
"Umm...." His eyes scanned the sea of happy fuzzballs yapping and tripping over each other, yawning and smiling, his eyes landed onto one I saw even when I used to work here.
The dog never seemed to be bought, and even though she was with the puppies it didn't mean she was one.
Jack scooched closer to the dog, his eyes gleaming with interest, and when the dog scooched forward towards Jack I swear in that moment you could see their hearts click.
"That one." The dog seemed to notice Jack mentioned itself, so it got up from lying down and made it's way over. Circling Jack once, she licked his cheek and then lied down in a crescent around him.
"Nice choice! What are you going to call it?" Staring at the dog's big brown eyes, she seemed to be really sweet. A smile spreading across my face, trying to keep myself contained in front of Jack he blurted out the answer quickly.
"Chica."
'Must have thought about it for a while huh?'
"Chica huh?... Yeah, I think that suits her." Closing my eyes as I grinned from ear to ear, Amy came back with the papers and I signed all of them except for the application.
Don't know if I'll even get the chance to give this to him, patients from a mental health institution who are given the title of most psychopathic inside and on government lock down probably won't be seen as getting a job with puppies.
Actually, how the hell was I even able to bring him around with me? Is America really that disappointing? Is the President someone awful that everyone now regrets voting for?
Probably.
But that's not the part that surprises me, it's that if Jack was really so dangerous...Why would they keep him in a smiley happy place like that? Doesn't it put the risk of everyone there in danger?
He seems harmless, but I know more of what's going on with him, and I like to believe that he thinks of me as someone to trust and to go to. After all, through the past month we've gotten really close.
The rest of the day past in between my own mind and the thoughts that made me wonder, and the happy moments Jack and I shared as we gushed over Chica on the way home,
along with all the supplies paid and in bags that swung on our hands. Chica's nose twitched, sniffing the air and anything that she passed, at times she would pause, but other than that she was really well behaved.
As soon as we got home, Jack closed the door, took the leash off of her and set up everything with my help. He seemed so happy, and when he turned to me, my heart stopped for a second to see there were tears in his eyes.
"Jack..."
"You really are someone special Mark, thank you, so much. You've done so much for me and, I don't know why you're doing this but, you're really making my life worth living."
"....You're welcome, Jack." Jack's smile growing, he wiped away the streaks of tears and contently went back to taking care of Chica, showing her all her toys and the dog bed she uses
after she comes back in from outside, her food and water bowl, her brush Jack would use on her when she starts shedding and the detangler spray so it wouldn't hurt when he did eventually brush her.
I told him I was going to take a nap, and as soon as I took my first step down the hallway I was consumed by thoughts and even more questions than before.
How did he become that way, and how terrible was his whole life in order for a month or two with me has made it worth living?
