The Need For Solitude

  (POV: Johnny Toast)

The meeting with Maxwell lasted longer then I thought it would. When we initially arrived at the McDonald's, it was about 6 pm, but when I glanced at my watch, it was 10. "Time seemed to go by fast, sir." I commented.
"Hmm? Oh, yeah.", He responded as he looked out the window, "I'm kind of scared to go home, Johnny."
I was confused, I figured he'd be happy to go home to _____. "What do you mean, sir, are you not excited to see your wonderful girlfriend?" I lightly punched his arm and smiled.
"Yes and no," he sighed, "I don't have an excuse for why I was out so late. I would just tell her the truth, but I don't want her to know that Jimmy's, and in turn you and me, are working with Maxwell. Maybe I'm just crazy."
"No, that makes perfect sense, sir." I replied. I wasn't going to tell anyone I was in cahoots with a renowned malevolent ghost.
"I kind of want a night away from her (not because I don't love her, don't take that the wrong way!). Maybe I could convince her to stay the night at the Acachallas' place, maybe make it seem like Gertrude insists on it. What do you think, Johnny? Is that wrong?" Johnny asked.
I thought before I responded. "It's understandable that you want to be alone, and I'm sure that Gertrude would love to have _____ over. It's your choice, though."
There was silence for a while as I drove. It was an eerily quiet night. As Johnny stared out the window, I couldn't help but wonder what he was thinking. I wondered if he was talking to Jimmy. I wondered how often they did that and what they talked about. I thought about asking, but I didn't. It's none of my business what they think about, I decided.
"I think I've made up my mind." Johnny announced after about ten minutes of udder hush.
"That's good, sir. So, what are you going to do?" I responded.
"I'm going to call Gertrude and see if she wants to help out with _____, and, since she's got an abnormally strong motherly instinct, she'll take her. I'm sure _____ would have a much better time with Sally and Billy than me right now. Do you think that's a good plan?" He explained.
"I think so, sir, but do you think _____ will be ok with it?" I questioned.
Johnny thought for awhile. "I'm not sure, but I'm sure she'll understand. AND Jimmy will make it up to her by getting her mobility back."
"That seems fair, sir." I responded. There was more awkward silence for awhile.
"I still do love her, Johnny, I'm just tried and want to be alone.", Johnny said, "I'll make it up to her..." he added on the end to himself.
"I believe you, sir, and I'm sure she knows, too." I responded.
