Abby's POV

My first day at Tondc was not as bad as I thought it would be. The patients were crazy, and the technology was not as nice, but my new coworkers were very nice.

I showed up an hour early to organize my desk and get to know the others. When I got to my new desk, there was a Panera breakfast sandwich and oatmeal waiting for me. I was very hungry, because I left the house at 4 am to avoid traffic.

I was chowing down my breakfast when an older woman with gray hairs and a network of wrinkles on her face approached me.

"Good morning, I'm Sarah," she said. Sarah gave me a big hug.

"Well, hello. I'm Abby," I smiled. "I'm the new head of pediatrics."

"Dear, you have a lot on your plate," Sarah voiced. "But you're young enough to handle it."

Sarah seemed really nice, and I hoped the patients would surprise me as well. First up, I had to supervise a tonsillectomy on a 7 year old boy. Before we even put him to sleep, the patient was squirming around to avoid the injection. His mom was probably a crackhead, because she was banging on the door telling us we were hurting him.

A couple hours later, some teenagers came in holding their friend who got beat up badly. They could have been in a gang. I had to put 14 stitches on a boy's lip and reset his nose.

For lunch break, some other doctors told me there was a nice patio to eat lunch at. I needed some fresh air, so I walked outside and up the stairs.

It was not what I expected. The 'nice patio' was really just a slab of concrete with a chain linked fence and there was graffiti everywhere.

At around 4:30, I was counting down the minutes before my shift was over, when I got a call on my cell phone. It was Marcus.

"Hello Abby," he said.

"Good afternoon, Marcus. Your day is probably going way better than mine."

"It's been... full of surprises," Marcus chuckled. "The new lady is nice. Her name's Diane."

I felt a little bit jealous at first, because Marcus doesn't normally think a female is nice until he gets something in return.

"The poeple here are nice," I admitted. "Someone brought me breakfast."

"That's good. You know, I wish you were here." Kane said the words like he was nervous.

"I wish I was still at Arkadia, we would probably be getting off early," I replied.

"Are you busy tonight?" Kane asked.

"No, but I can't stay up too late."

"Do you want to go out for dinner, just as friends?" Kane asked.

"Yes, I would like that."

"Good. Pick you up at 6?"

Even though I would have to leave an hour early from work to ease traffic, I needed to relax anyway.

"Okay, Marcus." I smiled at the thought of Marcus's rover picking me up for dinner. For the first time, I felt closer to Marcus, even though we were miles apart.
