Execution Day

Your mother pulled you through the portal and onto the other side. The castle was just as beautiful as you remembered, if not a little bit more sparklier and flashy. Unlike last time, it wasn't very sunny, and it was instead rather cloudy.

Your mother stopped for a moment and leaned against the wall. "I've never had to make two portals right after each other."

"Are you okay?" You questioned.

"Oh, Dear, I'm fine, don't mind me. Just..." She smiled at you. "I'm tired. I need a moment."

You wanted to point out that you didn't have a moment. A moment could be what costed Bill's life. And knowing that he did love you and knowing you loved him, you wanted to save him more than anything. And then get answers later.

"Maybe longer than a moment." She chuckled, despite the circumstances, and took a seat. "I'll be there, but you must go."

"I don't—go where?"

"To his execution sight, of course."

You gave her a look of exasperation. "Well, where is that?"

"The exit from the palace is just down that hall and to the right. Once you exit the doors, it's right there. I'll be there shortly, but you must go to stop them if you want to save Bill's life."

Without a word, you turned to run. The hallway was much too long for anyone's liking, and if it weren't for the rush of adrenaline and the strong sense of desperation, you may have stopped to catch your breath. You turned around the corner, and the first thing you saw were the big, double doors leading to the exit. You hurried down the long staircase and rushed to the doors. They weighed more than you did, and you had to put all of your body weight against them to get them to move even slightly. With all your might, you forced the doors open.

You nearly started running again, but there was a huge cluster of people—or demons—blocking your path.

You started forcing your way through them, receiving annoyed looks that soon turned into wide eyes.

"That's the princess!"

"What's she doing here?"

"Did something happen? Where's the queen?"

The topic of conversation had shifted from Bill's execution to your presence in the square. You moved past them, squeezing past fewer and fewer people as they all parted to let you through. Eventually, they had all moved so you could run straight through.

When you came to the middle of the crowd, where everyone was watching the circle with anticipation, you stopped, panting hard.

Your eyes skimmed the court. You saw many different contraptions, none of which you knew the purpose of, until you saw the guillotine in the very center.

You didn't exactly know how old your mother was, but you figured she was most likely alive during the reign of terror. And it wouldn't really surprise you if she took her favorite murder device from that era.

You were snapped out of your daze when you heard cheers from the other half of the circle, and your eyes darted over to the place where many guards were huddled around. It didn't take much for you to figure out they were cheering on the torture.

"Hey!" You yelled, running over to them. You grabbed one of the guards by the arm and pulled him back. "Stop!"

He wrenched his arm free and swatted at you. You barely got out of the way of his hand.

"This is the Queen's orders." He began to turn. "Unless you want to be executed for going against her wor—"

The guard stopped abruptly when he met your eyes.
