The rain poured down hard. You could barely hear the radio over the sound of the water droplets colliding with the windshield. The wipers we're going as fast as they could and it was still difficult to see the road.
You were caught in the unexpected storm on your way back from the grocery store. You ran out to get a couple of quick things.
The rain didn't worry you too much. You were nearly home, anyway.
The radio cracked until the signal of the station finally went out. Frowning, you reached down to turn channels, but the only thing you heard was static. Instead, you just turned it off.
As you came around the corner, you saw two bright headlights speeding your way. You half expected them to slow down, but when you saw them weaving around the road, you knew better than that.
You slowed down and gripped the wheel tighter, your nerves overwhelming you.
Just as the driver came to pass you, he swerved over into your lane. You slammed on the brakes, but they were wet from the rain. The car didn't stop in time.
There was a horrifying sound of metal crunching together and glass shattering, and then everything went black.
You didn't know what to expect, but the furthest thing from your mind was the blinding bright lights that shined in your eyes. You stumbled backwards, your arm shielding your squinted eyes.
After a moment, you put your arm by your side, attempting to get a good look around. Before you could, someone rushed past you shouting at people running beside her.
You looked down at the hospital bed they were quickly rolling down the hall, and it seemed like all you could see was red. The person was covered in blood, so we're the sheets, and the nurse that was already working on the patients wounds had the crimson liquid all over her hands.
You noticed his face and felt your heart stop.
"Dad?" You questioned softly, starting after the doctors and nurses running down the hall.
They pushed him into a room and didn't even bother to close the door before they transferred him over onto a new bed. Another nurse already rolled in a tray with all the necessary surgical things they'd need for immediate operation.
"We need to get him to the OR, now." A man said, glancing at the clock on the wall.
You looked up too, but you didn't look at the time for long. You wanted to see your dad. You weave around all the nurses and doctors until you finally got close enough.
As soon as you pushed through the people, you noticed the person on the bed wasn't your dad anymore.
Instead, it was you.
•~•
You jolted awake, letting out a quiet whimper. You had tears streaming down your cheeks and shaking hands.
For a moment, you just sat there, trying to catch your breath. It was an odd experience, and definitely one that shook you up. It felt real. Just the thought sent shivers up your spine. You threw the blankets off of you and left your room.
You stopped in front of Monty's door and knocked. A few moments later, he was standing there, his hair a mess and rubbing his eyes.
"Hey, what's...?" He trailed off, noticing your state. "What happened?"
You hesitated. It seemed silly now. It was just a dream, you knew it was. You weren't a little girl anymore. You shouldn't be running to someone when you had a bad dream.
Monty realized the tears staining your cheeks. "C'mere." He wrapped you in a hug.
You gripped his large shirt in your hands, balling the fabric in your closed fingers. Your eyes were closed tight, mostly just because you didn't want to cry anymore.
"It was that stupid dream again." You mumbled.
Monty hesitated. "Which one?"
"The accident. But it was me this time."
Monty gave you a sympathetic look you couldn't see with your face hidden in his chest.
"I thought it was done." You admitted, pulling back from him. "I thought they stopped years ago and..."
"It's okay. It was probably just a one time thing, right?"
"I hope so." You shrugged half heartedly.
"Are you okay?" Monty asked, his brows furrowed together.
You nodded. "It scared me, is all. I can't imagine what Dad..." You bit your lip in a futile attempt to keep yourself from crying.
Monty pulled you into his arms just as you let out a quiet sob.
He knew how much you missed your dad, even though you hardly ever talked about it. There were just certain things you would see that would remind you of him, and suddenly, your smile would fade.
As soon as he tried to distract you from it, you would always plaster on a fake smile and pretend like it never happened.
This was one of the few times when you actually showed how bad you missed him, and Monty was always there to try and make you feel better. But it was always hard.
Most times, you just cried until you fell asleep.
And that's what you did that night. And Monty stayed awake and with you until you finally drifted off, like he always used to.
